I am looking for a 70-72 Corvette. Wanted to know (ball park) how much more should I expect to pay for a LT1 vs a base car. I am open to a coupe or convertible. Definatley want a 4 speed. Thanks, Joe DeLuca Member 37862.

Re: 70-72 LT1 value
I was just over getting parts at The Last Detail this week and the Vette showroom next door (buyavette) took in a 71 blue convertible on consignment that really was in great condition...they're asking 56k but I do believe that may be just a wee bit high for a 71. Of course if they sell it my 70 goes on the block the next day- Top

Re: 70-72 LT1 value
Joe,
Why not look at the 1975 model?
It's the next "big thing".
Especially a convertible, because they will be worth a lot of money someday. You might even be able to buy and "flip": "The Last Stingray Convertible" for big money.
I would definatley get a big block, with its impressive specific power output.
Good luck.
Do you still own the red/black '71 'vert that you bought last May?
Nothin' beats resale red.Last edited by Joe C.; November 14, 2009, 11:30 AM.- Top

Re: 70-72 LT1 value
Hi Joe,
Why don't you contact member Kevin Goodman. Based on a recent post by him I realized he bought a 72 LT-! a/c coupe recently. He may be able to give you some info on the LT-! market at present.
Good luck with your search for a car!

Re: 70-72 LT1 value
I sold it. Its a long story but I am now in a position where I can afford to buy one and keep it. I was another victum of the bad economic times. I was thinking if the LT1 was not too much more than the base cars I could wait a few months more and look for one. It looks like I would need more than a few months to save the extra $. Thanks, Joe- Top

Re: 70-72 LT1 value
Warren,
What year were the two LT1s that your friend purchased, and what was wrong with them? If they were original and in good shape, your friend got the buy of a lifetime.
Joe,
Check out fleabay. There are two '70 'verts for sale right now. One is a real nice example that was bid to $41K but was worth a lot more. The seller relisted it at a starting bid of $50K and explained why in his description. I think he's probably looking for at least $75K which is not unreasonable if the 'vette is as described, even in these down times.
I have a '70 Laguna Gray LT1 'vert with white convertible top, M21, 411 rear, "M" code engine block casting date and original sales invoice that needs about $6K-$8K of investment to bring it to top flight quality. I wouldn't sell it for under $70K. Its not for sale, and I also know that I couldn't possibly get anywhere near that at this time, so I'll enjoy it, put the investment into it, and eventually get it judged. Good luck in finding your LT1.
Thanks.- Top

Re: 70-72 LT1 value
Both are 1972's. The coupe is Mille Miglia Red with saddle interior. Docs include Corvette Order Copy & Protect-0-plate w/pamphlet. M20, 3:55 ratio with all options except rear window defroster. Convertible is Steel Cities Gray with black custom interior, M20, 3:70 ratio. No options except custom interior, am-fm mono radio and optional axle ratio. Docs include window invoice, Corvette Order Copy, Protect-0-plate w/pamphlet, Dealer Sales invoice.
Yes, he got a helluva buy on both!Last edited by Warren F.; November 15, 2009, 01:32 PM.- Top

Re: 70-72 LT1 value
There's a lot that seperates the 70 LT-1 from the 71 and 72. I just don't think there are that many left. Given the small run and what it was made for at the time I think a lot made it to the track to die or were just run in the ground. Over the years, as I looked for parts for mine, I was seeing how many were wrecked and parted out. The one I have was a good example of one left to die , Mickey Thompson valve covers, Hurst T shifter, exhaust changed out, smog control junked, TI junked, ran to death in a very short life (mileage wise). Bringing it back to life has been a chore ( the last 5% seems to take the longest) but I doubt that many came back from the dead. Given the lack of creature comforts I imagine the other models were more attractive to keep in shape. Most of the ones I see are patchwork quilts, engines not original, color not original, etc etc.- Top

Warren,
For the 'vert, I think you'll find that the rear is either a 355 or a 411 and not the 370. You mentioned that it was equipped with the optional axle ratio, but according to Dobbie Dobbins' " Fact Book of the 1968-1972 Stingray" the standard ratio was 370, while the econ option was the 355 and the perf option was the 411.
