    62 passenger side window replacement

Good Morning. I am a new member and this is my first thread. I have a cracked passenger side window. It's a 62 conv. I was told by the previous owner that I could take the old one out and get a piece of glass cut as a replacement. The windshield is ppg. I want to have this car judged in Jan. and want to make sure I don't mess up. Also I have never removed a panel before and was wondering if there is a website that can guide me through the removal of the glass. Please give my your opinions. Thank you. Joe

welcome aboard. all the glass in your 62 was originally supplied by LOF, not PPG. There are several sources for correctly labeled glass for your 62. they advertise in the NCRS Driveline. you should buy a shop manual for your 62 before starting the window glass replacement. the NCRS on-line store can supply the shop manual. good luck, mike

Thanks Mike. Now that you mention it I remember seeing LOF on my other cars. My windshield is stamped with ppg. It also says solex. If I use lof from a vendor could the tinting of the glass be different? That was my main concern. I didn't want to have 2 pieces that look different. I will get the shop manuel and other books as recommended. Joe

        Joe:

There was some discussion sometime back on glass manufacturers. I believe that there are only one or two, but if you search the archives this discussion should come up.

Several of the Corvette parts houses carry this glass, and can get it properly date coded, if you wish to get your car judged. I don't remember the places that carry it, but try the standard parts places. I checked a couple and did'nt find it, so maybe someone else can give you some guidance.

Removal should not be difficult, but since I haven't removed the glass in a C1 I don't know the details specific to that car and I'll let someone else give you the procedure. The C2's are a breeze.

Thank you Paul: I took the glass out of my 65 but I'm a believer that Murphy is right there with me. So I don't take anything for granted, I ask. I contacted Glassworks and they are going to try and help me. From a judging stand point should I try to match the ppg windshield glass or should I put in the correct dated glass even if it looks different. I thought for appearance I would try to match the windshield. Your thoughts. I appreciate your help. Joe

            Joe:

I would put in the correct dated glass even if it does'nt match and even if you're not going to restore it. Why put money into a part that does not at least appear correct and could detract from the value of your car? Be sure to determine if you have tinted side glass before you buy the replacement. If it is tinted, I doubt that any difference in the color of the tint would be that noticable.

As for matching the windshield, remember that it is not correct. The PPG windshield in my 64 will eventually be sold for whatever piddling amount it's worth, and replaced with a correctly dated LOF replica (except for the sun shade, unfortunately).

tinted glass wasn't an option on the c-1 corvettes, just clear windows and windshield. Mike

I thought about it and agree with you. I contacted a few companies including Charlies glass. They were the only ones to install the glass I am buying from Glassworks. They are charging me 129.00 for the windshield and 99.00 for each door. I am replacing all of it with dated lof glass. It's worth it as you say to have the right parts. Thanks again. Joe
