    609 Water Pump

Just purchased 2 of what I believe are 609 water pumps. The casting numbers could possibly be 8's. What are the differences between the 609 and the 608 water pumps. The other 4 casting numbers are the same on both pumps. Thanks in advance. Paul

Good pictures always help with evaluating.

Paul, The 609 has the by pass hole on top of the big boss. The 608 does not?? JD

Right! The 609, by the way, has the smaller bypass hole in the top, so that the L-shaped fitting for 61-62 fits without the necessity of a sleeve.
        608 has no bypass hole.

Not only does the '608 lack the 1/2" NPT hole for the upper bypass elbow, there's no boss on the top side of the pump to drill/tap for the bypass!

Often, the 'fill' on casting emboss numbers is fuzzy leading to difficulty in distinguishing similar characters ('6', '8', '3'). But, the presense/absense of the upper boss feature of these two pumps is the distinguishing characteristic that's readily visible...

Thanks everyone. I was 90% sure they were correct, just needed that extra assurance.

Also, '608' castings are quite easy to find; millions were produced. '609' castings are definitely not so easy to come up with.

609's. Is it true they are dated but the date appears on the inside only??? Now just where is this date.??? Behind the cover plate???
The earlier 609's had slotted screws holding the cover plate on. The one on my 63 FI car has hex head.
I notice that certain judges aren't bothering to check to the numbers on the pumps. If they see the correct configuration of say a 326 or a 609 that's it.
I learned here and on my own that they is a big difference between a 326 and a 609 pump. Big casting difference at the by-pass fitting area. JD
