    64 Convertible Windwing/Moulding/Window Fitting Help!

I am REALLY glad you guys are out there to help and thank you for your ongoing support. I drove the car to the alignment shop today (slowly) and without doors. A funny site even in Fallbrook, CA. alongside the occasional tractor LoL.

So I have read the AIM section on doors and I get the basic architecture no problem. Here are the remaining questions:

    1. I understand how to insert and fit the windwing assembly (collectively) with three exceptions: a. The forward edge fits flush against the door outer-skin edge while the rear edge leaves about a 1/4" gap. I don't see a gasket for this and everything looks correct. Is there a gasket? How was this sealed? b. I have two "outer seals" that attach to the inside of the outer door skin. I actually have two sets (accidentally). One has holes, one does not. How are these fit and what is the orientation? c. The lower cast section of the windwing assembly fits over a long stud and there were remnants of putty on there. Is there a gasket there?

    2. I understand where the window goes but what is the assembly order? if I were to guess, it looks like the entire unit is completed (less panel, window glass, and covers) then the window glass is slid into the channel and window seat (filled with ??) and let dry. There is quite a bit of clear silicone in the window seat. Help! (and as always Thanks!)

    Drew:

Do you have the round bead molding attached to the top of the door? That trim piece is the "seal" between the door skin and the vent frame.

The vent assy is adjustable, both fore/aft and for inboard/outboard tilt. You should be able to get it pretty snug along the door top edge.

The rubber seals I think you are talking about are the wipe strips that are attached to the same bead molding mentioned above. The holes are for screw clearance. The factory stapled the rubbers to the stainless. You'll see the staple holes in your stainless. Hope you do have them, because they are hard to find.

The window glass is attached to its lower track before installation into the door. No silicone. The glass is press-fit into the track using a special set tape. All residual silicone needs to be removed. Take the glass and channel to an auto glass shop and they'll beat it in for you. The glass should overhang the channel by at least 1/4" at the front, so it will not hang up in the front vertical run.

      Hi...

I don't have any "bead moulding" which is probably my problem. Do you have a picture or part number on this animal? I spoke to corvette central and they don't have a clue.

      Thanks

      Andrew

        Andrew -

In your '64 Assembly Manual, section 1-Doors, sheet 11.00, it's item #3, 3826869-70 "Seal Asm.", sometimes called the "outer fuzzy" or "outer reveal molding". The illustration shows a coupe door, but the convertible part is shown in dotted lines, extending all the way to the front of the door, with the forward attachment (convertible only) shown in View "C". The stainless molding came to the plant with the rubber wipe seal already stapled to it.

That part is not reproduced - you'll have to keep your eye open for them (try the "Driveline").

Does anyone sell just the replacement rubber to be restapled to an otherwise good condition molding for a 64 convertible? That's what my situation is when I get to that point.

Be aware that there are several widths of SS moulding for the outer window wipe on the convertible. Back in the 70's I was attempting to replace my passenger side moulding due to some screwdriver prying damage from when the window became unglazed years before. I shopped all over the country to find the right one. Each one I got from a different source was wider (thicker) than my original 63. So, I believe there was some change in this part over the midyear model runs (63-67). Either width will work fine, and it is hard for anyone to detect the subtle difference. You could have one on the driver's side and the other on the passenger side and no one would know but you.

Further to my previous post, I did find replacement rubber material for mine and did restaple it, but that was back in the 70's.

Sure, got mine from LICS and "stapled" them on, using the original holes.

Thanks Mike; that's what I was planing/hoping to do.

There are two rubber seals available, one has precut holes for screws and one has no holes and is intended for staples. Ecklers and Corvette Central were my sources. The one w/o holes came in the "door gasket and seal set" from ecklers. The other was ordered individually from CC.
