1968 L-88 is it real or memorex!

On ebay, item number 280421364049, is a very nice looking 1968 427 coupe. What sets it apart is the fact that it is being advertised as an undocumented L-88-NO paperwork. It appears that it could be the real mccoy for it has a number of correct L-88 parts and correct casting numbers/dates. However, it is apparently missing all the J-56 spec brake parts in the front-twin pin calipers, reinforcements and proportioning valve as well as its aluminum radiator. I also have some concerns about the engine ID pad.The asking price has been all over the place. It apparently came out of california, does anybody know this car? It bid to just under $25,000 the last two times and now the bin price is $89,000!! Could some of the 1968/L-88 pros look this item over and pass judgement? thanks, Rick Kenney

If you haven't seen the thread about this car over on the Corvette Forum, search for "check out this stamp pad" or "l88".

Don't think that it is time to run down the friendly banker and talk about borrowing money to buy an L/88. NO docs available, and a ton of problems shown in the photos.

Tim said that this car's been discussed over on the Corvette Forum. Maybe someone there knows something about it.

Most of the discussion was about the yellow '69 seen in the background. A fellow from CA was determined to buy it despite a questionable history.

The description of the L88 is a little more forthright.

i was following that 68 on ebay from the start. a few weeks ago it was listed with a buy-it-now at $39,999. now it's at $89,999. i emailed the dealer and asked why the change in price. he said it was to scare off the low ballers and that he would honor the previous price of $39,999. not a bad price even for a good clone. My understanding is that from 68 on, Feds said you had to have a defroster for safety, hence no heater delete.

This car has no J56, an incorrect radiator, no overflow tank, the hood plenum has been opened up so that the air cleaner base couldn't seal to it, and has many other underhood failings.

The only thing I could find that it has going for it is how tattered the octane warning label is on the console. It appears to have been there for a long time.

Correct Richard. All cars destined for retail delivery were required to have a defroster.

All 1968 Corvettes were required to have a heater and defroster and that included the L-88 option package. Racers could have removed them, but they were equipped with them when they rolled off the St. Louis assembly line.
