    1966 427 engine suffix

I am looking at a 66 425hp car. Would the engine assembly date have a "I" or a "1" in th edate stamp?

    Thanks

Could vary by assembly date. I believe it could be either or possibly one of each. I believe this to be correct unless there is something unique on the 66's. Hopefully somebody will chime in if there is.

I have pictures of examples with two "I"'s in the engine plant stamping, one in the date and one for the suffix. I do not have any pictures of legit examples with a date that would have required the use of two, maybe others can comment here, but I believe again it would have been the letter I. I have never seen an actual "1" used in the engine plant stamp on a '66 427.

Hi Jeremy. I've owned my '66 L36 for 21 years now and the pad reads:

        T 1I 26 IL 6107216

However, the "1" in the build date appears to really be a roman numeral "I" that is missing the upper right corner. It is identical to the "I" following it otherwise (November '65). I haven't figured out how to format my photos smaller to send in this thread. If you'd like, I can always e-mail some real nice closeups for you that show clear broach marks.

        Take care,
        Mike '65, '66

Engineering directed that the "1" character be replaced by the "I" character in the pad stamps back in 1957; don't see 1's very often.
