    Mid year Chrome tailpipe Extensions

Is there a GM/Chevy tech reference regarding how far the chrome tailpipe extensions should "extend" out from the rear valence....? I've seen the extensions pushed in toward the body where the tips are well under the rear bumpers.... I've also seen them extending several inches beyond the bumpers....

    What's correct....?

I don't believe there is any such guidance. The inboard position will be limited by the authority/depth of the swaged end. I happen to like using the down-turns on the bumper halves as the plane to align to, since it approximates the slash on extension tips & presents a clean appearance.

I agree with Jeff, any further in or out and they don't look right. Bill

On 63's, you are somewhat limited as to how far you can drive them on by the galvenized heat shields, if you use them to be correct. I can still get mine on far enough to keep them behind the trailing edge of the bumper. I hate to see them sticking out too far. Looks like they were applied by some commando. The assembly manual is no help as the only dimensions are for the heat shield to the back panel, and the top clearance of the extension in the bezel.

I looked in the aims and agree with Stu. No dimensions to answer the question.
Those extensions are not fun installing. The originals were very thin. No such thing as NOS 63 extensions you know.
Only way you can have 100% 63 extensions is to restore the assembly line ones. I don't care if you have a 100 sets of NOS ones lined up. Betcha not one of them is correct.

To everyone who responded.... thanks for your comments.....

I agree with the suggestion of limiting the length to the edge of the downturn of the bumpers..... It just looks "right"....

Getting those crazy things aligned in the center of the exhaust bezel can cause you to lose your religion..... I found that by loosening the bolts on the exhaust system (all the way back to the manifolds..) helped bring the end of the exhaust pipe into better alignment with the bezel.... therefore, the extension fit better.... what a job....
