    54 Exhaust Fumes

Hi Guys, i am a "newbie" and the proud owner of a 1954, 1958 and 1980 Corvettes. I was hoping someone could give me some advice on a huge exhaust fume problem i have with my 54. The engine has just come back from a total restoration and on the first run i near killed myself and my wife with fume leakage. All holes have been blocked and i even went to the extreme of placing rags between the base of the soft top and the deck lid to fill the small space but to no avail - it should be noted that i have the longer exhaust pipes extending from the rear also. This has really got me stumped and i would appreciate any feedback you may have.

    Thanks in advance

      Re: 54 Exhaust Fumes

Part of the problem with exhaust fumes in these very early Vettes is just the nature of the beast.

However, if the engine is running rich (which can happen when the carburetor jets and metering rods wear), the perception of exhaust fumes will be greatly enhanced.

So my suggestion is to remove the jets and metering rods and inspect them under a strong magnifying glass for wear. As little as .001" change in metering rod diameter can cause a noticeable rich condition, so be ultra critical during your inspection.
