'67 Corvette Trim Rings Part #?

I'm looking for a set of original 4 trim ring's for my '67. Is the correct part #9796696 or #3923626? I've looked in the '67 AIM, they show the trim rings but give no part #. There is a bunch of them on eBay and GM Parts Direct has the #3923636 in stock but don't show a picture and I can't confirm positively which is the correct # for my application. Thanks for any help. The trim ring unit was #3901703 (it's in the Miscellaneous Shipping List in UPC 0, sheet C1), but that was a package of four of them. The P&A 30B parts book shows the '67 trim ring as #9796696, but I don't know if the Service part is configured the same as the original production-line part, which had the four retainer clips; I think the Service part had the full-circumference spring retainer arrangement.

      Patrick,
I also have been looking for originals and was told the 3923626 is for 68-72. I don't know that the replacement ones that are available from GM Parts Direct will pass judging. Haven't seen any of the repops with the correct 4 clips. From time to time there are correct restored ones for sale on Ebay. The last set I saw had a Buy It Now of around $560-580. I believe one of our members restores them and does a super job according to guys that used him. Hopefully someone will post. Good luck.

Thanks John, I was looking at UPC 0 Sheet A1. I would imagine the service replacements are full-circumference spring retainer arrangement but I won't know till I see a set. This one below should be the correct one, right? PT

This is a fine example, no rust on the ring but should the clips be black phosphate ???

Henry, here is a set on eBay which might be correct... but $880 for a set of four? It doesn't even look like it is an auction, just buy it now. PT

              hi john,

The part drawing of 9796696 drawn in 1969 is definitely the later replacement trim ring with the perimeter clips and longer valve stem hole.

I found in my notes P/N 3901708 for individual rings.

Check the current DRIVELINE page 38. Rick Miller (435) 668-7062 -- I think Salt Lake area?? -- rkmiller@infowest.com . Rick restored a set of original trim rings for my 1967 about 6 months ago. They came back earlier than his lead time, look great, and I thought his price was very reasonable. I wouldn't hesitate to contact him, as he also had some used and NOS trim rings available for sale as well.

The seller in that eBay auction above is also from Utah...wonder if it's the same guy. Thanks, I'll contact him. PT

P.S. Yep it's the same guy, just looked at the Restorer.

I think the original part number for a 67 trim ring was 3901708.

Yes, GM #3901708 was the original part number for the 1967 trim ring. However, that part number "died" in May, 1975 (and, actually, "unofficially" "died" in November, 1970) and was replaced by GM #9796696 which is the trim ring with the "full diameter" clips. I believe the 9796696 was originally a Pontiac Division piece that someone decided was an acceptable replacement for the 1967 Corvette application. Since the 3901708 was a one-year-only Corvette piece, I suppose that GMSPO wanted to "consolidate" it with some other part.

You may want to confirm the width of each of the center clips.

Joe - I don't know about the "unofficial" and "official" deaths of p/n 3901708 Trim Rings, but I have some NOS 3901708s (not 4 sale of course ) with the 4 clips in the "correct" locations in boxes dated 10/22/73.

And all these years I've been calling them NOS and now I find out they are "dead." Bummer.
