Input Shaft Seal...... What is it made out of for my...

    Hello,

I am curious what the original input shaft seal, and or the correct replacement input shaft seal would look like, or is made out of... part # etc... for a 67 435 with M-21

I think the part I ordered from Napa is the wrong part. The seal that came out of the M-21 is paper?

    Thanks,
    Jacob

    Jacob -

Muncie 4-speeds don't have a front seal; there's a groove cast into the inside of the front bearing retainer that allows gear lube that gets into that area to drain back through a hole into the main case.

There is also an oil "slinger" inside the tans between the gear and the fron pearing to reduce the amount of trans oil that moves into the shaft area in front of the bearing. No true "seal" is used as John mentioned

If you are talking about the GASKET that resides between the front bearing retainer and the main case, that gasket was a "whitish" or gray material. I don't think it was cellulosic (i.e paper), though. It is about 1/16" thick and some sort of composition material. It was last available under GM #3915019, but it's now discontinued.

The replacement front bearing retainer gaskets are now made from some kind of paper-like material and seem to work just fine. I've installed more than I can ever count in Muncie rebuilds with ZERO problems.

thanks guys, indeed it was the gasket. Mine was old and had it had been leaking for a while.

We used some a really good sealant between the transmission and the input shaft cover plate. If it doesn't hold, my buddy will fix it.

            Thanks a bunch,
            Jacob
