Opinion of this 67 VIN tag

    Hey all.

This is not my car and I have no plans to purchase it, but just looking at it raised some curiosity about the VIN tag. Notice the second vin partial stamping on the bottom. How would this car judge ???

Really weird -- and from what I can make out, it's not even the sequential VIN that shows on the bottom edge.

My guess is 194677S10744x with the last digit being a toss-up between zero, three, eight, or nine.

Very strange indeed, I've never seen anything like this but have no doubt it's real. Anyone who manufactures the bogus tags would never go to the trouble of making a repop that sticks out like a sore thumb. JMO. PT

I have no doubt it's probably real, but I really wonder if you had this car on the judging field, how would the judges look at it ??

This tag may shed a little light into how these tags were made too. Possibly several VINS stamped on a sheet then cut ??

I just found this tag interesting. It almost looks like the lower number ended in 7118 and it should have read 7518 and possibly corrected by the operator of the plate machine ??

I thought for sure that you'd figured it out but look and the last two "1"s compared to the other 1s and the fours. I think that Wayne is right. It's ...44x.

If the Vins were stamped and then cut, would we see the tops of "CHEVROLET 00". ...maybe?

Is it possible that the worker used a piece of metal stock to make the tag from a piece of scrap saved from some type of earlier mistake?

Either way as to what may have happened, this tag does look OK to me.
            Not that I'm any expert.

Re: Opinion of this 67 VIN tag

The VIN tags came in pre-cut, with the two rivet holes punched and the "Chevrolet DD" and upper and lower horizontal ribs pre-embossed by the supplier; the plant loaded a stack of them into the feed chute on a Graphotype embossing machine and manually typed the entire VIN.

That plate appears to have not registered properly in the machine for a previous car, and got reloaded into the chute and re-used instead of being discarded.

                John:

That explanation makes sense. Sure would have been neat to have been there and actually seen how this stuff was done.
