    old laquer paint

I have two gallons of lacquer paint, at least ten years old. Is there a way to determine how old they are? The cans have these numbers on the bottom:
    708 008449
    57 060596 0745

    708 008419
    57 060596 0745

Are there hints on the labels?

I am trying to determine if this paint would be more durable than the lacquer paint currently available.

    Thank you,

    Randy

What is the brand name and color of your lacquer paint?

It depends on how old the paint was when you purchased it...if it was ten years old when you bought it, then you are a lucky fellow. Otherwise, it's likely the same formulation available now unless it was purchased at a VERY SLOW paint store.

You indicate you have owned the paint for ten years...the first NCRS paint seminars dealing with making modern products look like original lacquer began around 1999-2000. The reason for those seminars was lacquer that was not as durable as in the past. I saw professional painter members fully committed to having only lacquer as the restored finish on old Corvettes change their thinking 180 degrees...after a couple of those seminars, I decided that's good enough for me.

If the lacquer is PPG, you can call their technical services group, and they can probably give you dates for those lot numbers. If it's DuPont, you might be able to get similar help through a DuPont product rep...there was a DuPont rep who gave the seminars with Tom Ames, but I don't have his card anymore. Without a DuPont contact, you'll probably need a painter or bodyshop make the inquiry for you.

        Sorry, the paint is PPG.

I visited the local PPG outlet. A salesman recalls they were having problems with lacquer before 1986, which is when they began to offer BC/CC.

It's no good! Send it to me and I'll dispose of it properly!
