I use a product called "Nu Bright" produced by Calgon. It is a air conditioning aluminum coil cleaner and brightener. It works very well. You may be able to locate this at a local HVAC supply store or possibly on the Internet. Also you can try aluminum mag wheel cleaner, it will likely work as well with a bit more elbow grease and repeated soaking.

Here is the product from Grainger's

Ken, thanks for the idea,I was thinking of something that would spray on and would wipe off , I was also thinking of the stuff that we use to clean wire wheel hub caps, but maybe I'll try the my auto parts store for the mag wheel cleaner, since it will be the easiest to get.I also look into a hvac supply store that may be near by to me.

I cleaned the Th400 from my 72 when I had it apart, then used a scotchbrite wheel in a drill to buff it out.

Just a note...I'm in the commercial refrigeration buisness and products like Nu-brite are made to be spray on/rinse off chemicals. They work quite well and there are several strengths of chemical, some acid based and some alkaline based. If you choose to use these strong chemicals protect the yellow tag on the transmission, the paint may be taken off as well.
