I learned this from an old corvette parts guy that I have been getting parts from for years. off the top of my head his first name is Joe and he sells lots of parts out on the west coast. I was told by him that it was a known casting error in '56 and that GM never used the casting number 3731762 in 1959. I did some research and didn't find this casting number used in '59 either. I figured his info to be legit after that. I could see that the date would be cast upsidedown but a part number casting error was less likely. Then again I have only seen one head dated like this. I would be interested in knowing the months of others that have these 59 heads to compare. I think the head I saw was dated F269.

The two different dates I am aware of are E 20 9 (a pair of heads) and E 24 9 (a single head).

Colvin's book and some people of the classic chevy site both reference a different 3731762 head with a large 'T' cast into it. I have not seen one of these heads yet.

I was able to review one of the heads today and it was dated E 22 9. It falls within the dates that you listed. There was a large "N" cast in it between the rockers but no Large "T".

So, is it possible that the year indicator on the date code was upside down from at least May 20th (E 20) to May 24th (E 24) for that particular casting mold?

I guess it could happen. Just seems unlikely to me.

The brass plate on the pattern carrying the casting date was changed every day; not likely that an error of that nature would continue un-noticed for five days.
