I checked the numbers and found the following information cast into the end piece of the A6 compressor:
* K296 *
B - 1 1 8
6555302
After researching part numbers and date codes, I'm still not sure what the "B 1 1 8" means, and the number 6555302 (casting number?) seems to be on a lot of A6 compressors. If I understand right, the * K296 * is a month/day/year code format = November 29, 1966. The car build date corresponding to the VIN is January 11, 1967, so if I understand correctly, at about 43 days prior to the car build date, this AC compressor should be correct.
The Foil sticker on the body of the A6 compressor is missing a lot of the color and print, but "Model # 5910645" is clearly visible. The part of the sticker where the Assembly Date Code is located is almost entirely worn away. The foil is all there, but the color and print is gone. It looks like the date was impact-printed with a typewriter, so the indentations are still visible, and it reads: 12 23 62 (December 23, 1966, 2nd shift). So I think this is the right compressor for this car.
If it is, I would like to get the A6 compressor rebuilt, with a ceramic seal to minimize oil leakage. I want to be careful about how and where I get it rebuilt, so they understand this is not a core-exchange situation and I get back the exact same unit, and to be sure to preserve the original foil sticker so it is not further damaged or thrown away. I think my best chance would be someone local, or within reasonable driving distance, so I could explain the situation in person to whomever is doing the rebuild, as opposed to sending it to Florida or Texas with a note.
Can anyone recommend a reputable vintage automobile A/C repair business or individual in or around the Dayton, Ohio area?
Thanks very much,
Scott
