    C2 firewall rivets

Where can I find correct rivets to fasten the metal clips for the wiring to the firewall?

    Thank you,

    Randy

      Re: C2 firewall rivets

Most of the major suppliers sell rivets for most of your applications. I myself spent quite a bit of time researching original versus the reproduction rivets available. I was able to find some of the correct ones I needed at a local fastener wholesaler "Motor City Fastener" is who I use for this, as I am in the Detroit area. I actually have a couple of interesting "stories" if you will about my adventures with this reasearch (I will not go into those here right now), and I will add this:
I found one particular rivet (the large flat headed rivet used in many applications on the car for years), to have some differences from the originals I had removed (also had found a couple of un-bucked rivets hidden in places where they had fallen during assembly), and the reproductions available. I ordered a couple of boxes from Paragon. What I found is the large OD on these rivets was just over .500 inch (1/2"). All the orignals I had checked closer to .562 inch (9/16"). I know this is fairly meaningless, but this was one of those things that "got me wondering", as this is not hard to do. I proceeded to call around to see if anyone of the suppliers who listed rivets in their catalogs had one that was the correct size. Without mentioning names (I will say that it was located in Long Island), this one supplier told me over the telephone "this is the most ridiculas thing I have ever heard, why does this matter to you". Coversation became a "little heated" and I was told by this man that I was banned or Black ballled from making purchases from him in the future. I found this to be totally harlarious myself (and I have purchased from him many times since), but DID NOT buy any rivets from him, needless to say. By the way, I do not know how many different manufacturers out there are making these rivets, but I found the ones from Volunteer to have the larger head (the gentleman there also had no probelm taking the time to go get one and check it with a caliper while I was on the phone, and they were about .560" dia.), and I now buy those style rivets from him exclusively. I will also add that I make specific notations of what type of rivet I remove when doing a restoration or working on something that requires any type of rivet and have found when checking part numbers in the AIM books (this took a fair amount of time so it shows you where my mind is at), that they did not always use the same type of rivet that was called out. I have also found that on differnt years (my 70 and 72 mostly), that even though it called for the same rivet in the AIM, it was different from car to car. So, after another of my long winded replies, I would suggest to you (may be too late), and others, that the best thing to do when disassembling or removing these rivets is to note the type of rivet that was there originally.
Maybe not the exact answer you were looking for but maybe this will help a little.
      Good Luck,
      Lynn

I forgot to mention that it does sound like you are speaking of the rivets that hold what I call the large "J" clips or loops, to be the small round headed style of rivet, but this has varied.

Check with DR REBUILD. Should have what you need.

My car is a 67 AO Smith. I have tried Dr. Rebuild, LI Corvette and have looked in more catalogs. I have not found anything. The closest I have found is the rivets to hold the grille to the mounting bracket. The shaft is close but the head on these is too small. A regular assembly rivet is too big.

            Thank you,

            Randy

              Randy,
In my earlier post I mentioned "Motor City Fastener" in the Detroit area, I am sure there are others, but I would bet you would find them and their catalog online. I was able to find a couple different type of rivets there , that I could not find at the Corvette supply houses. Worth a try. If you cannot find them (or someone similar) online, send me a PM and I will get you some contact information for them.
              Just trying to help,
              Lynn Houk

I checked with Motor City Fasteners. It was quite educational. I bet many of the venders purchase items there. Unfortunately, I did not find the rivet I was looking for.
