    antifreeze c2 327/300

how clean does the system have to be to put in
    ZEREX Go5.
The car is just finishing a frame off. I have replaced all lines and
heater core also a new radiator. Do i need to flush the block it was
not rebuilt at this time and has the old antifreeze in it which is
prestone dont know how much was left in it.
    Thanks

You could remove the plugs in the side of the block.

Bill - consider not using any. Requires a heated storage area however.
Best advantage is that you can drain system at anytime without environmental concerns.

Pull the block drain plugs, then install and flush the system with water.

Use at least a 50/50 mix of G05 and distilled water for maximum corrosion protection. Straight water will destroy the radiator in a few years.

You can check with your local fire department (which in most communities should have a "hazmat" expert). Some communities have recycling centers. Where I live its okay to dump old antifreeze into the sanitary drain system.

That's one way to kill the rats in the sanitary drain system, Ha!

I have concerns primarily when I flush the system. The volume is too much to capture for recycling, and difficult to do if you pull the side plugs (which is no easy task on engines with side mounts). I used to just let it go into the street gutter (not the radiator drain, just the water flush), but I am concerned for the pets and the law now.

I'm getting ready to do it again when our cool season gets here, so I am interested in a good method as well.

            Stu,

Don't worry too much about the flush water. It is too diluted to do much harm. Remember that ethylene and propylene glycol solutions are sprayed on aircraft and runways for de-icing. If you're concerned, drain it into the soil and keep it away from the street gutter. The idea is to keep it out of the surface water until it has time to degrade.

I can check if you wish but I'm pretty sure that automotive anti-freeze is not a hazardous waste under Part 264 of the Code of Federal Regulations (RCRA). However, it is toxic to animals and humans and is usually regulated at the State and local levels. These programs usually prohibit pouring it down the drain. In sufficient quantities, ethylene glycol and molybdenum can destroy treatment plant chemistries.

The best way to dispose of the 50/50 mix is to take it to a recycling center. However, many people dump it on the ground (I'm not condoning this). If you cannot recycle it and have to dump it on the ground, dilute it...a lot. Also try to broadcast it over soil so as to not allow deep penetration. Don't do this near a garden area. Everything but the heavy metals will eventually break down.

              Paul;

Thanks for the tips. I'll try to be careful and not let my dog watch. He usually loves to be with me in the garage, and he is so snoopy. I had a heck of a time walking him this morning, what with all the discarded candy wrapers - full of Chocolate!

In all the years of having to change my antifreeze, I always just drain the radiator and take off the lower radiator hose. I like others here , don't believe theres really all that much left in the system to do any harm. Where I live, a very small town, the township takes in any old paint, solvents and or anti-freeze so the street drains arn't contaminated. If I killed anyones pet because of not catching the stuff before it had a chance to do any harm, I'd never fogive myself.

If you have a lift you can raise the car and place a 5 gallon bucket in an oil drain under the radiator drain. Then move the oil drain bucket setup under the motor drains plugs and drain the motor. Keeps the Green Police happy.

Drain it by removing the lower radiator plug and both block side plugs. After that fill with tap water and drain again. Let it drip dry then fill it with 50/50 using demineralized water and G-05..

Thanks Duke! "Straight water will destroy the radiator in a few years." Did not know that. Is there something else one can do/add?

Have been adding a lub for pump which claims it also protects radiator.

G05 has a very effective hybrid corrosion inhibitor package that protects any and all metals you will ever find in a cooling system - iron, aluminum, brass, solder. It has been OE on Mercedes Benz cars for over 20 years and OE on Ford and Chrysler cars for about five years.

As far as what "water pump" lubricant you use and whether is has a corrosion inhibitor package equivalent to G05 I have no idea, but I would bet it doesn't

Preventing freezing is only one of the two major functions of "antifreeze". The second and probably the most important if you want the cooling system to last for decades is the corrosion inhibitor package along with a suitable change schedule. The ethelyne glycol does not wear out, but the corrosion inhibitors are consumed over time as they do their job.

what happens if some of the prestone is left in and is mixed
                          with the Go5.

I don't think there are any significant adverse effects from a little residual "green" (IAT) antifreeze with G05 or any other HOAT unlike Dexcool or other OATs, where it is a no-no.

But I recommend draining the block and a thorough system flush when switching from IAT to G05 HOAT.

If you don't understand IAT, OAT, and HOAT, search the archives to understand the differences.

Be careful with how you use the word "Prestone". I just bought two gallons of Prestone brand DEXCOOL - buy one get one free mail-in rebate.
