    Syncing 54 Carbs

I need to sync my carbs. I have a vacuum tester. Can anyone tell me how to use it?

    Thanks Greg

Are you asking about a uni-sync float gauge for the carbs ?..........

Yes. I have found instructions but was wondering if anyone with experience on the 54 carbs has some pointers?

          Cathy:

I set up the 3X1 single-barrels on my friend's '53 decades ago. I remember that he had instructions from Chevy on how to do it. I followed them exactly and he was happy with the result. I had a Uni-Syn but don't remember if I needed it.

I've used a Uni-Syn to synch the carbs on my '54. It made a noticeable difference in the idle smoothness and this was in spite of my having previously synch-ed the carbs using the Chevrolet method.

The procedure would be something like this:

            -1. Remove the air cleaners.

            0. Start the engine.

            1. Each carburetor has an individual idle speed screw. Adjust each one until it is just touching its stop. This will keep the engine running while you.....

            2. Loosen the linkage that connects the carburetors together.

            3. Use the Uni-syn on one carburetor and gauge the air flow by looking at the height of the ball. Adjust the restriction on the Uni-Syn as needed to approximately center the ball in the column.

            4. Without changing the setting of the UniSyn restriction, compare the air flow of the other two carburetors to that of the first.

            5. Adjust the idle speed screws of each carburetor to make all three flow identically.

            6. Retighten the linkage and re-verify that the air flows remain the same.

            7. The idle speed probably changed, so reset it now. I'd do this by backing off the idle speed screws at the end carburetors, and useing the screw on the middle carburetor to make the adjustment. I'd finish by running the idle speed screws on the two end carburetors back down until they are just touching the stops.

And that's it. Several steps, but none of them are tough to do.

            Jim
