    70 vert. sealant questions

What is the gray sealant by the chrome corner pieces. It looks like the factory filled the corner area up and then put the corner pieces in place.

What is the little foam strip that goes across the center piece?

What is the sealant that goes between the fender and the windshield frame. I pulled it out just to make sure there were no rust issues and there were not in that area at all. Kinda looked like weathered 3M strip chalk.

What did they use along the pillar posts that is an off white in color along the outside.

Lastly, what is the foam strip that also went between the stainless molding and out side of the window frame? Looks kinda like two sided tape with foam between the tape.

    (1) It's a sealant very much like 3M StripCalk (which you already know). AIM describes it as "Part No. 3710409, Sealing Compound" (UPC 0, Sheet D8). Mine was still pliable after decades.

    (2) It's a foam dam to keep the sealant from flowing rearward away from the edge of the trim. (AIM UPC 1, Sheet F10)

    (3) Pretty much as described. Since it was exposed to the elements, it gathered dirt pretty badly. There's also supposed to be a weatherstrip in that area right below the windshield but I never found them on mine (UPC 1, Sheet A17). There is also a 3/4" hole near that area on each side of the cowl...the AIM shows a rubber plug with sealant in those holes (UPC 1, Sheet A6), but the body shop filled mine with bonding adhesive. Be sure those are sealed or you'll get water inside the car.

    (4) I believe you're describing the hardened product I found in that area. It's plastic seam cement, Part No. 3851624, (AIM UPC 0, Sheet D7).

    (5) It's a seal, but it's not shown in the AIM. I believe it must have been supplied with the weatherstrip retainer as an assembly.

      Thanks Chuck,

Mine is still pliable as well. I wanted to remove it to treat metal so it will not rust.

The gray chalk looks like it came out of a chalk gun. Any idea where to get some of that stuff.

I have the 3M strip chalk. Looks like there is a norton gray strip chalk based on another thread regarding the silver chalk to seal the stainless.

        Bill,

I bought the Norton gray strip caulk on amazon.com. I am amazed to hear from both of you that your material is still pliable. My car has 38k on it and is chipping off in completely solid chunks.

(Greg) We're talking about the sealant under the center support trim at the windshield frame, and the cast end caps...it's like a pliable nonhardening putty. Mine was a grayish beige under the end caps, and black in the center. You can't see it unless you take that header trim off the windshield frame. The hardened material you're seeing is probably seam cement available in caulking gun tubes at your auto paint supply store.

(Bill) I'm thinking that all of that sealant, black, gray, etc (Tag 84) must have been dispensed from guns. Note that in the center, the AIM instruction is to lay down a 1/2" bead in front of that foam dam. However, other locations call for a 1/8" bead...I doubt you could do both with the same gun, but I can't see those guys "rolling ropes" on the assembly line. Since it's under the trim, color is not important, and the 3M StripCalk (or equal) is probably the best replacement product.
