'67 300 hp choke rod adjustment

What's correct relationship of rod from choke coil on manifold to attachment to hole on choke mechanism on 3810 carb on a 300 hp '67? When choke is held closed and rod disconnected fron carb, is rod supposed to be above or below hole. Chevy manual is confusing.

    Thanks in advance

    Bill,

you want the rod to put pressure on the choke to close it so have it just above the hole.
Thats your initial adjustment. I go a little further and use a heat gun to bring the coil to operating temp. As the temp comes up you can watch the choke flap slowly walk open. Once it is there I tap the throttle open and make sure the fast idle cam fully drops out of the way. If not I bend to adjust. I repete the process by blowing compressed air on the coil to see that the coil winds up again. If all is working you should be able to tap tha gas pedal and the choke will snap shut.

If you do this a few times you'll have the choke set before you even have to start the car.
