TI magnet---Is this destroyed or still useable?

Remainder of magnet looks good except for this chipped off area.

    Thanks,

    George

George --- I would give it a try. I have an early '64 K66 distr. with a crack that goes from the outside to the inside; haven't installed it yet but hope it will function acceptably . I've heard somewhere that minor cracks have minimum effect, so unless you're going racing and need that extra advantage, go ahead -- (report to us if successful).

BTW, speaking of racing, I believe your photo is of a 1111263 ball bearing distributor -- am I correct ?

      Thanks for the reply,

It is a 263; how could you tell from this photo?

looked like the magnet's bottom plate was sitting flush with the cast iron housing, so I went into the basement and brought up an NOS '263' and another K66 unit with a vac advance (its magnet 'sandwich' sits higher, on the big brass washer).

          Great eye,

I Pulled out one of my 093's and sure enough, very visible difference in the "height".

I don't plan on using this 263 any time soon (has been on the shelf since 1987 with another one I picked up somewhere along the way).

George-I have been rebuilding TI distributors for years and have had several that the magnet is broken. If you have all the pieces-one can JB Weld them back together and they work just fine. When I have had them cracked, but not completely broken, I break them and use the JB Weld-that way they are solid. Your magnet appears to be just chipped off, but not broken-it should work fine. Remember, this system is an electro-magnetic design. Check the coil "bobbin"-it should have resistance of (per GM) 550-630 ohms, however, I do not use them if lower than 580 ohms. If all else is correct and working, your magnet will not give you any problems.
