Thinking about dropping in an HEI distrbutor in my 71. Its an original LT1 motor with a base motor distributor in it,cant find the TI, and frankly dont want to pay the crazy price for it if I did.Is a points conversion kit better. I just can get that crisp throddle snap I long for with points and condenser.

Re: Points, uugg
Relatively easy to convert the TI distributor to points, and will work just fine. That way you can always go back if you decide to at some point in time. Another choice is the use the current distributor as a platform for one of the conversion kits available today. Makes for a neater installation and you can keep the radio shielding if you like to listed to the old radio at times.Bill Clupper #618- Top

There is much more to throttle response than point dwell angle. A well tuned motor with a point style distributor will respond just fine. If your motor is lazy I would be looking at timing and carburetion more than the points. A HEI unit is actually a good device although obviously wrong for your car but buy itself likely wont yield the results you expect, unless that is you simply don't have your present distributor set up properly and the engine timed right.- Top

HEI ignition could be a better choice if you purchase the HEI that is used in the ZZ4 crate engines. This HEI has the centrifical and vacuum advance designed for a performance engine.
What you would lose is your tack function in your 71 unless you convert to a 75 Corvette type electronic tack that was used with the first year of introduction of HEI to Corvettes.
Not having a HP performance designed centrifical advance and proper vacuum advance may be the only changes you would need to get you crisp throttle snap.
Getting rid of correctly adjusted/fuctioning points and condensor alone is not going to give you crisp throttle snap.
If your 71 is using electronic controlled vacuum advance like it came from the factory with, try bypassing this. Buy a length a vacuum hose and connect it to the full time vacuum , not ported vacuum source on your Holley carb and connect it to the vacuum can on the distributor.
Also insure that your vacuum can on the distributor is functioning, no leaking applied vacuum. You may see an acceptable difference in performance. One thing for sure, better in the city gas mileage and lower engine temps in stop and go traffic.- Top

Re: Points, uugg
The HEI distributor, at least the early Corvette ones with a tach drive, may be to fat to fit in your engine comartment. Unless you have a used one in hand, the least expensive route would be one of the points conversion kits -- but the other posters are right. Your issues may have nothing to do with the distributor, unless the unit is just worn out. In that case converting to a pointless sysem will do little good.Terry- Top

Re: Points, uugg
Several years back, there was a company that was converting HEI distributors to tach drive. Unfortunately they have gone out of business. Apparently the HEI unit will fit in a C-2 or C-3 as he sold quite a few unitsDick Whittington- Top
