    1963 Daytona Blue Paint

I am having my '63 SWC repainted. I received a test panel and it was coded GM 916, Glasurit-55, Daytona Blue Metallic. I would like to confirm the correct color is metallic versus solid/non metallic. I recall the vehicle prior to stripping had metallic, but it was subtle.

Wanted to double check if the paint should be metallic or solid. Chevrolet brochure shows Daytona Blue as a solid.

Confused. Thank you in advance for your help.

Mike, my frenid has a 63 conv.is painted Daytona Blue and we talked about his car reguarding the metallic in his cars paint, which said it was correct, It is like you say- subtle.

as terry notes, there was no purple hue with original Dayton Blue. i had a 63 340 hp roadster painted locally about 15 years ago , and when parked next to our original ZO6 , it was obvious the roadster had a purple hue and larger than original metalfalke particles. . the local paint shop used a Dupont formulae back in the 90's so i'd suggest ya avoid that formulae. mike

Thanks a lot guys. As usual, great guidance. My test panel has no purple hue- fact at a distance, appears close to black. Metallic seems subtle (need bright light).

            Happy driving !

              Michael,
If you want an accurate and honest evaluation of your paint sample, send it to John Ballard, he is an absolute expert in Corvette paint colors.

If you want some of that with the purple hue -- I have some left. Never finished the whole car, yet. But now I know better, and I have a plan.

                  Michael,

I would suggest to take the spray out sample you have outside on a bright sunny day and move it back and forth in the sun to check out the "Look" of the metallics in the sun. Unfortunatly most new formulas have metallics that are larger than the original. This gives the paint a 60's custom metal flake apperance.

My 63 is Daytona Blue as well, and I have had it since new. The metallic is, as described, subtle. I have had to tell/correct so many people at shows, specially in the shade or at dusk, that it is dark blue and not black. My Impala driver sitting next to it in the garage is also dark metallic blue, but it has a whole lot more metallic in it. To appreciate the Vettes color, it must be in direct sun light. The only distortion I ever see on mine is on the back after a good flogging - lead fumes, Yeh!!
