    63' STEERING GEAR BOX- "PART#" -vs- "NO PART#" ?

In versions(isuues) #3 & 4 of the NCRS Technical Manual(for the 63-64 Corvette)...it states that that the Steering Gear Box should have...." PART# 5666723 and possibly "Check Lube" designations".
In version/(issue#5) of the NCRS Technical Manual it says "It Should Have No Numbering", why such a DRASTIC CHANGE in the manual and is the manual CORRECT?

The number should be there, some folks have said they have no number, but my opinion is their box was rebuild with service parts. I've never seen a 63 without a number.

The Check Lube part is correct, it may or may not be there.

      Hi John,

I believe the "check lube" started to appear in '63 around the #16,000 serial range.

Check the archives as I think we covered this info extensively not long ago.

Here's a link to a previous discussion on this subject. The results indicates that the "CHECK LUBE" first appeared in production in May 1963. The vast majority of covers have the cast number 5666723.

I am attempting to post picture for the first time, and I was out photographing a water pump for a different thread, but thought I would snap this photo (not the best shot), of the original unmolested steering gear box on my 63 VIN #19210, just for the heck of it and see if I could post it(I'm practicing). She's a leaker so I follow the instructions on the box just about every time I take my car out!!

PS-Just thought I would add that I see under my name that I am now a "frequent poster". Not quite as exciting as the new phone book arrivng, but exciting all the same.

I do not see that I got the picture in the post (practicing). I will try again after doing some reaserch as to what I am doing wrong.
