    Banding leaf springs

I have the signode bander, the bands, the original springs, the car, ....just no idea how to do it

On a 1960 vette, can anyone tell me how to band the 4leaf springs together.

    Much needed help

Sorry, but I'm still hanging out here. Can anyone show me pictures of their rear leaf springs. I cannot remember where the band goes.

Gary, thanks so much for the response. I'm afraid I'm still in trouble on this. I'm trying to figure out how to actually crimp with this signode tool. Do you know if he did his own?
          Sorry man, I'm just stuck

Junior - Here's a photo of the band clamp which goes on the top surface of the spring. You can see the 2 crimps which the tool makes in the banding process.

It's been a while since I've done it, but the process goes something like this. Wrap the rubber insulator and the band around the spring. Slip the clamp over one end of the band, thread the other end of the band through the clamp, and have a partner pull tight. Open the jaws of the tool, place the open jaws over the center of the clamp, and squeeze the handles together once. Cut off the excess band.

The tool actually cuts & folds 1/4" notches in each side of the band and clamp locking the assembly in place. The signode tool crimps in the upward direction (lower photo) where the originals were crimped downward as shown.

Great pics. Tim! Junior, when I worked at Hendrickson Tandem a few eons ago we used the same procedure but we also had a tool that tightened the banding before crimping. Since then I have seen these tools used for banding palletized containers. Possibly a facility near you has one. The tool slips under the band after it is looped and the clamp is on, but not crimped. The end to be cut off later is threaded through the ratchet "wheels", then two handles are grasped and the top handle is "pumped" tightening the band, the crimp is made and the ratcheting tool cuts the extra length of band.

Any Company that ships and packages with streel banding will have a crimper,
try local packing and shipping companies.

                      Hey Junior,

Still got that tool? Are you willing to rent it out?

I actually borrowed it from a friend that owns a trucking company but I'm sure I can get it again.
It might be Monday before I could get it in the mail to you, is that okay?
The place where I purchased my bands gave one extra one and I am so glad, because I ruined the first one. After that it was smooth sailing.

                          Thanks Junior,

Did the tool create the correct reverse (downward) crimp?

                            Junior,

Where did you purchase the bands?

I bought a repro set for the 59 spring set I restored and there are 2 different lengths. The longer one is for the 3 leaf position, the shorter for the 2 leaf position. All of these are about 1" shorter than the originals. Because of this they will not overlap enough to get them to be pulled through the clamp.

Were yours long enough to get on either side of the clamp?

                            Rich
