I bought a set of black universal, 7mm, Pertronix wires and slid them into my old braided sleeves. I have only had them on for a few months, but you can tell by looking and feeling the core that they are far and away better than the Packard cores. I picked up a new pair of dated wires for judging when I decide to go that route.
It was a pretty easy job. I took the spark plug boots off my old worn out dated ones and used them on the new wires to further maintain the look. I chose 7mm because I was concerned that the 8mm would open up the braided sleeves too much and they would look too short at best and not secure at both ends at worst.
I did not do it, but I read that you can run your old wires through the dishwasher and they come out really nice.
There is an old set on eBay right now that would donate the braided sections if you do not already have an old set.
