When did Chevrolet start stamping the VIN numbers on the engine blocks for 1960 Corvettes?

When did the switch from aluminum VIN plate in the door jam to stainless steel VIN plate on the steering column occur?

The earliest car with a VIN stamping on the pad that I've been able to document is car #1617 built approx. the first week of Dec. 1959. I believe the VIN plate move was prior to that car.

I know that the VIN tag for #890 was aluminum, and in the door jam.
Anyone have a VIN later than #890 that is in the door jam (as opposed to the steering column)?

I was also reminded that Dale Pearman and others have witnessed October dated blocks with VINs hand stamped on them.

It seems we have this topic going on two forums. The VIN on an Oct. dated block doesn't really mean that much since we don't know what car number it was installed into. For that matter, according to the Judging guide, it could have been installed in a car built in April 1960.

Hi Folks
I purchased Vin 00867S103730 This summer from a fellow in southern Indiana, going thur the hoops of fixing it up. The serial plate is attached to Steering Column. Any idea's of staining carpet versus buying new? Also looking for new grab handle & carboard liners for inside trunk. Any help greatly appreciated. Maybe someone out there knows this car, last title change 09/04/88.
