    1965 Jack and Wrench Question

I picked up a slightly used repro Type 1 Jack and Jack Handle.
The JM says the Type 1 jack was used for Early 65's. Corvette Central says it was used through VIN 12000 in 1965. Since my VIN is 8847 (Feb 4th) I went with the Type 1 jack.

Do you think a type 1 jack will pass judging for my VIN ?

Seems the CC info is more precise than the JM. They aren't 100% consistent.

The Jack Handle does not have the hole that is 6 1/4 inches from the top.

Can someone tell me the size hole in an original Jack Handle ? I want to drill mine to make it "correct".

How well do the repro jacks and handles judge ?

Any modifications I should make to get these repros to look more original ?

I would think your type 1 would be right in line. My 65 VIN # 10752 had a type 1. Should judge fine. I do not know the size of the hole in the handle. Can't help on that one.

Re: 1965 Jack and Wrench Question

I just checked an original handle that I have (I am almost certain it was from a late 65, but not sure exactly), and here is what I found. I checked sizes with drill blank so I would say these dimensions are VERY accurate. This handle has three holes in it. The through hole (6 1/4") from the end with the "lug wrench" on it. as well as the hole on the back side all check to be 11/32" (.3437) in diameter. This was a nice snug fit on all three holes with the drill blank. Checking some of the other dimensions, I would say it looks that the 6 1/4" dimension you mention is to the EDGE of the hole (not the center), so remember to add half the diameter of the drill to where you center punch or centerdrill for it. The whole in the back side I check to be 5 3/4" to the center of the hole from the same end.
Hope this was able to help you,
      Lynn

Hi Mark, your VIN window is safe with the Type I, however, since repos to date have been easily discernable, expect a minor deduction if it does not appear to be TFP.
Likewise, early '65 production wheel wrench handles did not have any holes.
Late '65's had a single hole in the backbone that was stamped before forming. An astute judge would recognize the NTP configuration of the hole if it were drilled.
The three hole handle was TFP for '66 & '67's.

Mike - would you be OK with an 8800 VIN 65 having Early parts on it like the "no hole" jack wrench ?

This is great information, and I would certainly agree with you about an astute judge picking that out. You can clearly see that the holes were "punched" before the piece was formed on the handle I have. You might be able to fudge one up with a file, but someone who is familiar with stamped parts and knew what to look for would probably still pick out the "repro" fairly easily.I have never had a 66 or 67, but I did have a very late 65 (serial number after 20000). Any chance it may have been with that car?
