I'm getting ready to replace the turn signal (directional) switch in my '62. Is there anything special I need to know on how to do this? How do you get the new one down the steering column? (I was going to attach a string to the old one before I took it out and use the string as a "traveller" for the new one.)

Re: Turn Signal Switch Replacement
Yes! Attaching a 'pull string' of some sort (twine, wire) and gently drawing it through the steering column along with the wires you're removing IS the way to go!
When you go to re-install the new/replacement switch harness make sure you're attached FIRMLY to the ends of the new harness and draw them SLOWLY yet firmly down the path through the column.
Last, when you re-attach the TS switch housing to the steering column, make sure it's on ROCK HARD. Any rotational 'slop' in the interface between the switch housing and column will result in erratic switch contact and/or cancelling function.
You'll know when you have things right... The TS lever will SNAP crisply into the RH/LH turn position and return SMARTLY back to the center/off position when the assy cancels after a turn is complete.- Top

Re: Turn Signal Switch Replacement
If you already have the harness OK , if not look to buy the real original one where the male ends are large as seen here . The repro's and replacements have smaller split ends that can fall out or get lose at the females . There on e-bay now and then with correct male ends if you can see it!
