I own 68 L71 25941. The engine assy stamp is same day, 0708.

Can't remember the cast date now, I'll check, but I think it was F, not E.

Body build date L18...July 18th

Hi Jeff,

Sorry, not an interesting story; saw it on Craigslist, called and e mailed for more info, bought it.

I own a mid March built '68 435 vert that I am restoring. Some of the things missing from the engine are the smog system, lift brackets, and valve covers. I will be able to use these items (except for the AIR hoses---dated too late for my car).

Purchased the entire engine for what it was going to cost me for the AIR system.

If by chance the owner of this Vette is located, and if he's/
she's interested, I would keep it intact for them.

I have found several original engines in the past, and have always tried to locate the car/owner, but never have.

I have never found anything as complete as this. I would love to hear more about the bolt head markings and other items listed/posted. Need this information not only to determine the originally of this engine, but also for verification of what's right for my 435hp engine.

Looked at mine today. L71 with T0708IR. Cast date E22 8.

Funny thing is, when I had this car judged, the experts thought that cast date was too early for the assy date.

Interesting.
One would think that a couple of months prior would be well within the "window"?

Maybe this engines codes/dates will help affirm the possibility of such?

Yes, I was very glad to see pictures of your motor that show an assembly date a cast date similar to mine with a VIn so close. I think some judges tend rely more on their personal experience over the "guidelines" and there is nothing wrong with that. That's why they are judges.

The issue with my motor is that it has a grind out on the VIN. The assy stamp is very good. So the question is: "is it a factory grind out or not?" I posted a thread with pictures about this a while back. At the meet, the judges were skeptical about the VIN grind out and their opinion of the time between the cast date and assembly date being "long" added to the doubt.

Thanks for all those great pictures. Did you get the AIR manifolds and check valves too?

I don't know how posts like this get into the "Judges handbook"; is there a particular person within this organization that I could forward this to?

I did get the air manifolds and check valves (and dated hoses for same).
you can see a partial shot of these beneath the engine in one or two of the photos---I listed the numbers found on the check valves and hoses.

I'll look for your post concerning the "grind out".

The particular person in this case is called the 1968-69 National Team Leader -- Chuck Berge. You will find him, and all the other Team Leaders, listed on the third page of The Corvette Restorer or click the button above labeled "CONTACTS."

You might also want to note another recent thread entitled "NEW KNEE" or something like that. Chuck is in for knee replacement surgery, so either he will have time on his hands or he will be so busy with PT that he has no time. Hard to tell right now, but my point is he may be distracted for a while.

I don't own the car the engine goes to but I have been trying to pick through and find original pieces to restore my dads 68 390hp car and I would be intrested in some of the pieces you don't need.

PM me if you don't find the car and would like to sell some of the parts or whats left after you pick through what you need hell I'll buy it for a spare block. For example my original intake manifold bolt hole area has been broke off and I'm needing one.
