OK fess up did you buy this original battery for $1500?

OK, maybe I'm naive, but why did this NOS battery sell on ebay for $1,524 (nearly 6x the value of a repop battery)? It is apparently a Delco DC-12 battery, cat # is 558 with date code "Y9X". What years would this work for and be absolutely correct for (58-63?)? I cannot decode the date code... I was looking at it for my 59, but wow! Is it really worth that extra couple of points? Fess up if you bought this battery :P

If someone were buying this battery to put on a shelf and admire as a curio, I suppose it might be worth this much to someone. If they are purchasing it to use on a car, they are NUTS.

First of all, as soon as electrolyte is added, its life starts "ticking away". With an old battery like this, that life could be quite short.

Second, I believe this is a SERVICE-style battery. These were usually different than assembly line batteries, although often in rather minor ways. Still, I don't know why someone would want an "almost correct" battery at this price.

If the purchaser is into NCRS judging that appears to be a be a fairly steep point/dollar ratio. Let's hope it is correct for his car.

I don't think it will be correct for ANY car. I believe this is a SERVICE-only configuration.

Why would an original or New Original Stock battery have the need to add "Original Equipment Line" cast into the case?

It wouldn't. I've never seen an assembly line battery with such a script. It smacks of a SERVICE battery with a marketing "tag". It's supposed to tell the buyer that it's like the original battery. With an original assembly line battery, there's no need to tell the owner it's an OEM quality battery; he knows that. Plus, he probably won't even notice anything on the battery until he replaces it.

Well I can tell you it's certainly not coming to Australia !! It's a service replacement battery. Why would someone pay $1500 for a service replacement ? Something doesn't add up. Maybe Warren Buffet is restoring a car and tried to outbid Jay Leno. Stewy

They probably used a sniper website that automatically bids for you. It's nice because it will bid for you at the last second, even if you are in bed or forget about the ending of the auction. Snipe bids may piss off some sellers, but it's a necessary evil, to help avoid shill bidding.
