    Spindle Arm Torque

On a 73 there are two bolts with nuts, that attach the steering arm to the steering knuckel or spindle. There is also a short, but large diameter bolt that threads into the upper area of the spindle and secures the caliper mounting bracket. I have not been able to find the torque specs for these fasteners in the AIM. I also looked thru the service manual but could not locate the information on these bolts. Any information would be appreciated.

The attached page is from the Corvette 1966-82 Shop Manual by MBI.

Not so sure about the nomenclature, but hope it helps. I'm following in your footsteps in the next few weeks.

I use new lock nuts when rebuilding these. The top stubby bolt I torque to 120 ft/lb and the lower 2, either the 7/16-20 to 60-65ft/lb or the 1/2-20's to 100 ft/lb.

Dennis, thanks for the chart. I bought the car 16 years ago, took it apart the next year and after retiring this summer decided it was time to put it back together. Good luck with your project.

Gary, thank you for the information. Your numbers are close to what I was thinking. Nice to have a second opinion.

GM never published torque specs for the steering arm-to-spindle bolts, either for the 63-67 7/16" bolts or the 68-82 1/2" bolts. So, you won't find them in the Service Manuals. Since these front spindles were delivered to St. Louis as an assembly, you won't find torque specs in the AIM, either.

Gary's specs are about what I use.
