Leaking filler plug on Mid year Pos. Trac

Has anyone come up with a good solution to stop the "oozing" of oil from around the filler plug on a Pos. Trac case?

I have drained and refilled the diff. case on my '64 (the oil level is about 1/8 -1/4" below the bottom edge of the filler hole when level)..... I ordered a new cork gasket for the filler plug from LIC .....I've tightened the plug (w/ the "warning plate" in place...) about as tight as I can..... It still oozs......

Has anyone tried using a rubber "O-ring" instead of the cork gasket?

    Other options....?????

loctite makes a teflon paste. remove plug, clean with ether or alcohol, apply the teflon paste. try to clean the threads of the differential housing with ether/alcohol saturated Q-tip. install plug and pray.mike

I wonder whether teflon tape wraped around the threads of the filler plug would work, as well???

tape will probably work just as well, but the paste excess can be removed with dry paint brush, wheras the tape excess sticks out like sore thumb when having the cars judged. i especially like the paste for gas line fittings because its excess is removable and , unlike the tape which can fragment and end up messing with needle/seat assemblies in a carb, the paste doesn't seem to travel. at least i've never disassembled gas lines and found residual paste inside a carb. perhaps it does travel, but it apparantly doesn't lodge in a carb orafice. mike

          Garry:

I use tape on all of my wet threads, cars, plumbing, everything except that which specifically requires thread sealer. Any excess can be trimmed off with a sharpe utility or Xacto knife. For the filler plug, thread sealer would also probably work, as well as the paste Mike mentions.

I have used waxed dental floss wrapped around the threads of a oil plug with desired results.

                Hi Garry
With care, the tape can be applied to be covered by the Warning Tag.
If the taping is unsuccessful, try plumbers joint compound.

You don't think that GM changed the filler plug from straight threads to pipe threads in 1965 because the straight threads worked just as well, do you? Even the pipe threads leak but not as badly as the previous design.

Garry, this is what I used to seal fuel lines and brake lines. It's an aircraft product and works really well. Made for high heat. Gary....

Loctite 545 works super. Not available in auto stores. Try any industrial tool supply. Travers, McMaster Carr, MSC, etc.
Wonderful hydraulic sealant that Barry Homes taught me about many years ago.
I use it in various places on old fuel injections and it's a life saver.
Don't use teflon tape. I threw my old roll out in the field long ago. Judges don't like teflon tape either. Also it has a way of getting inside the part your are working on.
Guys insist on using it on fuel injection inlet fittings. Next thing you know they split the fuel meter cover big time. Not a bad thing though as I know somone who makes that part.

Top pic is a January '64 diff with the "303" rear cover and the straight fine-thread ('63-4) design plug. A pipe threads design plug is shown below for comparison.

2nd pic is of the cover off my early '65 (#014xx) assembled AP 9_16_64.
This is still a "303" cover [cast inside] but with PIPE threads. Shows there might have been a hybrid transition period before switching to the next design "375" cover.
