    Need help choosing utility cart

    I was thinking about buying this Rubbermaid cart from Home Depot:

    I like this cart because it's plastic. No rust, easy to clean up. The first job I plan to use it for is holding up my tranny. That's the only item that hasn't moved from my old neighborhood. It's a M-21 restored by 4 Speeds by Darrell, still in the shipping container. The cart has two shelves, is rated 200 pounds max per shelf (400 pounds total). Is the tranny too heavy for the cart? I also plan to have the rear end restored, will the cart be up to the task? I can't think of anything heavier that I might want to use the cart for. Other than that, I will probably use it for parts / tools for whatever job is at hand.

    Ideas?

    Thanks,
    Joe

    I believe the cart is strong enough . I wouldn't want to use it to repair anything on. Seems expensive. If you prefer just send me the m-21 Ha Ha
    I would prefer a good work bench for the rear end.
    Good luck.

      Wayne,

      Thanks for the reply. I wasn't planning to use the cart to work on heavy items like the rear end. I would use it for portable storage for the tranny while I work on the garage (framing, electric, insulation, sheeting). Unless of course I decide to send the tranny to you for "safe keeping." I would also use it to move heavy things around the garage and for small projects.

        Joe, you might consider either a hydraulic cart or a wire mesh cart. If you're just looking for roll around storage the least expensive alternatives would be a furniture dolly or a dolly with 2 extra wheels to lay down. Gary....

          Joe,

          for the past 20 years I have had 2 of the rubbermaid carts they are 24" by 36", double shelfs and all. They are some of the best investments I have made in shop equipment. In '89 I paid 119.00 each from Graingers.
          I have done 12 bolt Camaro rears on them so a little old corvette pumpkin is no trouble. The only problem you'll have is seating races as the shock from the hammer is absorbed in the cart. So I always do my vette rears ona steel bench.

            All,

            Here's the cart I wound up buying:

            I ordered it today, so the jury is still out on it. Torin says the top will hold up to 330 pounds.

              I use the top of my large plastic garbage bin which holds heavy stuff just fine for a while until the top starts to bow down some (unless it's real full). I got that baby for free from the city.

                  Joe;

                  I'm glad you took my humor in good stride. Actually, at my age, I feel I have to justify every puchase I make on the basis as to whether it can or will be used by my heirs. The other day I bought a riveting kit and I couldn't sleep all night debating whether I should take it back to the Auto Parts store for a refund. Both my sons have nice sets of Snap On tools they bought (I bought) when they were in the U of I Aviation School A & P course. They won't need my big tool chest and work bench which contains a collection dating back to the mid 50's.

                      I've had this Craftsman "Project Center" roll-around cart for many years to keep frequently-used tune-up stuff in; I think it was about $90.00 15 years ago. Also has a removable Masonite top.

                        Joe, Does this mean that the garage is finished? Time to get back to work on the 66? Maybe we can see who gets finished first. My 67 is down to the bare frame and ready to get started on restoration soon.

                          Tom,

                          I wish it meant the garage was finished. What it does mean is that I need to do the floor soon. The cart will make it easier to roll all the stuff that has accumulated in the garage over to the basement (it's a detached garage). Or it's just an excuse to buy another toy. You be the judge! I'll just go ahead and concede victory to you now, it will save us both some trouble! Do you have any more pictures? I am planning to drive my car to the KC national in two years. We'll see. I am close to being done with the electrical. The only circuit left to run is the one for the lift. I've been shooting emails back and forth with Mark Tulley about it.

                            John;

                            I have what appears to be the same "roll around" cart that you have. I was able to also get a nice size tool bench from Sears under which I am able to park my roll around cart. I found the tray beneath the Masonite top a good place to keep gaskets flat. Trouble is I forget that they are there and rolling the cart out and in is not real easy - something like parallel parking.
