    '82 Speedo/cruise problems, still...any suggestions...

Just returned from the transmission shop. Speedo was off a good 5 mph (reading faster). Point of note: the transmission is a 90's model 700R4, not the original, although it appears the original tailpiece was used. Anyway, it had a 38 tooth speedo gear, we put in a 40 tooth and it broke, so we put in a 39. Its working and is much closer on speed, haven't checked it yet, but the needle jumps up and down up to about 35 mph. Further checking, we found the cruise transducer was bypassed and one cable used, explains why the cruise doesn't work. Receipts for this car, six years ago and at 76k miles (it now has 82K), show that it was taken in for a jumping needle and a new cable was put on. I'm assuming at some point the transducer went bad and was bypassed? Or did they just put a one piece cable in because thats all they had? What do I check on the transducer to see if its bad? I want to get the cruise working and fix the erratic needle problem. Will getting the upper and lower cables and putting everything back original fix everything or does the later model tranny throw a wrench in everything? Not having any information or receipts on when and why the transmission was replaced doesn't help. This may be when all the speedo/cruise problems started. HELP!

Check the transducer to see if it is locked up or seems tight or binding. I would expect it to exibit one or more of the above problems. Rarely do you find a bypassed transducer in proper working order. If the transducer is obviously bad, I would start with a new or rebuilt unit and 2 new correct cables. You could still have other problems, but you will be off to a good start. If you still have a bouncing speedo after replacing the transducer and cables, I would re-examine those speedo gears in the transmission. Be sure to check the one inside the tailhousing. Also, I would suggest looking up the cable configuration in your AIM to make sure that all is correct. I am not sure about your "82, but some cars came with gear adaptors made in a 90 degree to alleviate binding in the cable. Chip.
