    C3 hardtop installation/removal

The other day I re-installed my 1970 hardtop after having it off of the car and stored for a long time. I have removed/installed it only 2-3 times during the 10 years of my ownership, and each time I tell myself that there's gotta be a better way.

To install the hardtop, I have to first initially fasten the hardtop to the decklid by installing the bolts on each front side of the top/decklid, then pull the decklid release handle, gently raise the hardtop/decklid as one piece, have someone hold it up while I install and tighten the hardware in the three remaining holes at the back and rear sides, then gently lower the whole thing and lock the decklid in place. The reason I have to hold the hardtop/decklid up is that is the only way I can see to get to the underside of the three holes at the rear to tighten the nuts because the softop prevents me from doing so when the decklid is down. This seems awkward as holding the hardtop/decklid up is quite heavy and the only thing at that point holding the hardtop on is the two bolts on the side. Am I missing something here, or is that the only way to do it?

I install and remove my HT each year on my '71 as the season's change. The method you describe is exactly the approach I use.

Yep, it's a two man job, but I've done it once or twice by myself and it was a BEAR! But, with two folks working together it's a reasonably fast/simple process that speeds up with practice...

Those side bolts you attach first: can you describe them for me? Mine are missing and have been going without. This year I'm hoping these might reduce some of the rattling noises.

Your copy of the AIM ought to depict the forward/side deck lid hardtop attaching bolt recepticals being installed. Plus, most of the typical Corvette catalog houses will list the threaded recepticals as well as the attaching bolts in their sections dealing with 'hardtop' and/or 'rear deck lid".

If your car's rear deck lid doesn't have the recepticals installed and/or holes drilled in inner forward side of the deck lid fiberglass, then it's either a replacement deck lid or the the car wasn't originally HT equipped...

I have the receptacle for the bolt, just don't have the proper bolts and don't know what to use.

I has been several years since I have put the hardtop on my 68. Have stored it in a up-stairs bedroom over the garage for at least 17 years.
When I did put it on and remove it when I did not have the storage space I have now I always did it without any help. To install I would have the studs in the hardtop and move the drivers seat moved forward. I would position the hardtop on the back of my shoulder and install and remove it. My reach is long enough to hold the top at the front center and rear center to install and remove it. Probably not a safe way to do it.

Yes, that's the same technique I used when I couldn't find/recruit an assistant. Makes you resemble a 'turtle' when you enter the car with the hard top over your head & shoulders!

Greg, they're listed in just about every Corvette catalog that features C2/C3 parts. Don't worry about knowing what it looks like, I sincerely doubt you're going to find a match for a correct original at your local hardware store and the catalog houses sell them for something reasonable, like $4-6 each...

If you just have to know what one looks like, there's a decent sketch in the Dr. Rebuild catalog. His PN 1334601 for a reproduction or 1334606 for an NOS Chevy part.

Does anyone remove the soft top when they put the hard top on? Or is that too much trouble? With the soft top removed it should be easier to reach the bolts.

Also, is the hard top mounting bolt that goes through the center of the deck lid reproduced?

Thats the way I have to install my hardtop on my 73. There is just no room with the soft top in the back and I understand the soft top is not that easy to get lined up for a great fit if you take it out

When I install the hardtop on my 74' I follow the same method that you are using. It is much easier and safer to install with two people. You wouldn't want to drop that top ,no pun intended.
