Spare Tire and wheel for the '66 P48 option

I am wondering if the Black Book is right that the quick take off wheel option (P48 alum. knock-offs) had 5 of those wheels, one as a spare in the carrier. Is that right?

That's what I understand. Mine has a KO in the spare but mine are repros.

Michael-the P48 option was 5 wheels. Note: if you see the option wheels, look to the front long bolts holding the spare tub cover V shaped reinforcement strap-the standard wheel used a bolt 9 1/4" w/o any nut welded to it, while the K-O wheel came with a bolt 9 5/8" long (P/N 3833383), which had an upset shoulder w/a nut welded in place near the threads. FYI: all 5 wheels would have had the center cone in place, even the spare. Another interesting point of the K-O wheels is the center cap of the spinners; the red, white & blue was spray painted, not tape as all the repops & most restorers deliver today.

Here's the set of 5 originals off '66 # 13162 (99% sure), pic taken just after I bought them ($450 Canadian) in the fall of 1976. Still got 'em.

          Stampings are: B 1-3-66; B 1-3-66; B 1-4-66; B 1-4-66; B 1-4-66

OK great thanks, but just more stuff to buy! My K-O wheels have a raised circle stamp on the backside with KH in it. I understand that is original? And I do have the bolt on the spare tire carrier you mention. However, the spare is a very old, Goodyear Power Cushion white wall (bias ply) on a very old and dirty steel rim. I guess I need to pony up for another knock-off and a new tire. Does this as is lose lots of points on Top Flight judging? Thanks again for the info.

Here's the "oval" (not raised, IMO), with the K-H and the "D" number in it.

There is no deduction for having a non-matching spare, providing that the other 4 rolling tires and the spare are of Original Equipment Manufacture (OEM). It get's a little complicated, as the judges would expect to see a spare KO, and there are various deductions for reproduction rubber. I would suggest you get the Tech Manual & Judging Guide for your model year, unless others are willing to quote chapter & verse on this subject.

OK, thanks, that's similar to mine, except mine is more oblong and closer to circular than the picture. Anyway, if the rubber needs to be OEM, mine is (probably original '66 Goodyear), guess I might just take my chances on having a steel spare and not a KO. Seems like a lot of money and hassle if it is not necessary. Thanks again for all the info.

                  Mike,

I would consider putting the old bias ply tire, if original, on a newly purchased K-O and use that for judging purposes. Take the old rusty wheel, clean it up and put a new matching type tire that are on the car and put that in the carrier. That way you have a trusty spare when driving the car. Just my .02 since you are going to spend a fortune for an additional K.H. knock-off wheel.

Thanks, not a bad idea. I do need a dependable spare for those road trip along old Route 66!
