    63 convertible inspection

I'm looking at a 63 convertible which ostensibly has original paint and interior. I already own a 63, so I'm pretty familiar with the car, but, I"m not sure about the originality issue. Are there some ways to verify both of those claims with just a visual inspection?

    Thanks, Mike

Given any miles, some wear/aging will show on both areas of a 45+ year old car. Plus the original paint on 63's was generally not of exceptionally high quality. Look and believe your eyes, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is. Mileage?

The mileage is currently under 70K, but obviously not "guaranteed" to be original. I've seen a few un-restored low mileage 63's, so I think I have a good idea of what to expect in the general appearance of the paint. I'm looking for something particular that would not likely be found on a re-painted car, if possible.

I won't see the car for a few days, so any advance suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks, Mike

        Mike,

I don't know if you have seen any original paint cars, if not here are a few things to look for. The bonding seams will be very noticable with two lines about 3/4" apart running the length of each seam. Look on the lower sections of the body. Front lower valance will have the hair texture showing through this is because it was barely sanded at the factor. The bond for the front lower valance to parking lamp panels is rough!! Lots of times a lump or 2 of glue in the seam. Check the parking lamp panel dog leg bonding strip if untouched it will have grind marks running where the lip is formed to the parking lamp panel and it will be a sharp edge. Check the hood surround opening it will have a unsanded round edge and the hood will have a sharp edge. If there is any chips or checking that exposes under coats look for red and dark grey any other colors and it's been messed with. If you need more I can list another dozen or so areas to check

Thanks Rich, those suggestions should be enough for now. I may have more questions after I see the car.

Since this is a convertible instead of a coupe, there IS a place that's accessible (kinda/sorta) which should reveal the original paint... Pop open the rear deck lid and eyeball the area of the deck lid's mounting arms & springs.

These were installed when the car went through the factory paint booth and you should find reminants of original overspray (on the springs, inside the mounting uprights) that would have been 'missed' by a painter doing a re-spray of the car's body...
