    A production vs B production

Was reading in the Black Book today that in 62, Dick Thompson won A production and Don Yenko won B production.

Assuming that A production was the Fuelie, what was a B production Corvette?

    Possibly a 57 Corvette.

AP was created in 1962 for the 327 Corvette, and there were probably a couple of other low volume, esoteric cars in this class; 283s continued in BP, where they had lived for several years. It didn't make any difference which production engine you were running. Most chose the highest horsepower FI engine for obvious reasons, but a '62 with the base 327/250 would also have been AP, and a base 283/230 would have been BP.

At the Sting Rays' debut race at Riverside in October, 1962, they were classified XP (experimental production). I believe the lone Cobra, driven by Ken Miles, which was the big competition was already classified AP since it was released and homologated earlier in the year. So, even though the Sting Rays and Cobra were in "different classes" everyone knew who the race was between. Shortly after that race the Sting Ray was classified AP.

With the introduction of the 396, 327 Corvettes (and 289 Cobras) were bumped back to BP, and I think 283s were bumped to CP and continued to be very competitive in that class for nearly another decade until the 240Z showed up.

A few 396 Corvette drivers cleaned up AP early in the '65 season until the 427 Cobras started showing up.

There is a picture on pg 66 of Corvette America's Star-Spangled Sports Car of Don Yenko driving a BP 57 Corvette with a horn on the hood at Watkins Glen in 1963.
