One question has come up regarding engine sequence numbers for 1955 and 1956 engines. Same question applies to both passenger car and Corvette engines.
I thought that the first five characters of the engine sequence number were stamped using a gang holder, then the last two characters were stamped individually, one at a time.
This would mean that the last two characters would not necessarily line up with the first five characters.
I have looked at a lot of 56 engines, and this appears to be the case. I have seen some where the last two characters line up pretty good, but it is still clear that they last two characters were stamped individually.
So, having gone the long way around the barn, here is the question:
Did the factory ever stamped the engine sequence numbers all in a single gang holder for 1955 or 1956 V8 engines?
Here are two 56 engine examples.
