What type of brake fluid should I use when doing this brake overhaul?

This one will turn out to be more of a religious issue than a technical one. You wait and see....

That said, I use silicone fluid (DOT 5) in all our old cars, even in my vintage racer. NEVER a problem. If you decide to use this fluid also, just know that pouring it in and bleeding of the system must be done at GLACIAL speeds to avoid entrapping air.

I have both in cars and you will have less problems with DOT5 (silicone). I am tired of spending time rebuilding wheel cylinders etc due to the corrosion etc from the DOT 3&4 fluids. If I had a car that I drove 5,000 plus miles per year and prepared to replace the brake fluid on a regular basis I would maybe stay with the old fluids.

I agree with Jim & John. Rebuilt all of mine and flushed the lines with denatured alcohol. Everything works fine.

If you are doing a complete overhaul, it's an excellent opportunity to convert to Dot 5. It doesn't collect moisture like Dot 3 or 4 and is perfect for cars that spend alot of time sitting. Just make sure you have purged all of the old brake fluid.
