Correct Hood & Support Bolts vs. Painted Ones

Yikes, at the last chapter meet, the bolts on my hood (hinge) and support were dinged minor points for not having the correct finish. They were painted flat black rather than being black phosphate. Well, in order to restore that minor deduction, I have bought and installed the correct black phosphate-coated hardware.

The problem is that since I did this correction, every time I wash the car, often the moisture causes these correct bolt heads to turn orange with rust. Is this something that I will have to live with? Or, is is possible to get away with a slight coating of oil (preventing rust) on these correctly finished bolt heads? -Clark

    Clark,

Hood support I take it to be what I call the hood prop (with the ATWOOD stamp) if thats what you are referring to then the bolts are plated silver cad/zinc. So that would solve your problem. The bolts to the hood have a captured split ring lock wahser and the bolts to the skirt have a captured flat washer.

      Clark -

Typically the midyear hinge-to-hood and hinge-to-inner fender bolts have at least some blackout paint on them. The hood support bolts (at both ends) are zinc-plated.

        Clark,

sorry I mis read the post. As john said the hood inge bolts have some black paint on them so if your liberal with the black out you can stop the flash rust problem.

          Clark,

Are you sure they were not dinging you for flat black? Flat black would be incorrect BUT they WERE blacked out and if you used the correct shade of black they (the judges) were incorrect for dinging you.

john, of the 4 midyear 67s i have had none were zinc plated...all were cadium, 1st 67 was 3 years old, 2nd was 1 owner car ...both were 100% untouched, early ncrs books said cad, later ones switched to zinc due to what i believe was because cad was harder to get done. main reason i will most likely never submit car for judging is due to changes made which i believe are to appease members - not maintain correctness
