    Car Judging Registration Winter Regional

I have been doing registration for this meet for 25+ years and the ploicy has been registration opens 1 Oct. In this end I use the postmark date starting with Oct 1 and work back/forth based on postmarks. In the past there has not been a problem as anyone entering a car before 15 Oct got in. I do this to even out the fact that the driveline gets to the different part of the US at different times but the relevant issue has always been delivered in time for everyone to have the entry postmarked Oct 1.

I normally wait until Oct 10 or so to start processing to give the USPS time to get all the 1 Oct entries to me. Based on the stack of early (30+) entries somebody with a real early Sept postmark date may be on the standby list.

The above has always been our meet ploicy. I never really asked National if this was SOP but it looks like the time has come. Is this the policy with the entries at National and other Regionals? If you have any issues with the above methlodgy please let us know asap.

On a related note. If you wish to judge at the meet you need to register before Dec 1 as that is the date we furnish judging lists to the team leaders.

Not that this affects me directly, but in looking at the registration form it certainly is not clear to me that entry forms must be postmarked no earlier than Oct.1.

The sentence 'Registrations accepted after October 1st 2009' can be interpreted many different ways in addition to the intended meaning. You might want to give those people 'not in the know' a break accordingly.

The earlier years registration forms had the 'postmarked no earlier' but somewhere along the way it got changed which is why I posted this. I started with the 1 Oct then worked from the early entries. Best comprimise I can do.

        Good Morning, Tyler.
I'm only a Judge and don't have to pay much attention to these details, however,
Why are early registrants being penalized?
All of the Regional and Chapter events that I have been involved with encourage, request and reward early registrations. Exceptions are the National Convention and the Judges Retreats that have specific "no postmarks before X/XX will be accepted and returned".
Your question is probably best posed to the National Judging Chairman and your Regional Rep.
Likewise, a clear delineation of deadlines, either way, is not discernable in the form.
In addition, Judging assignments consideration is often given on a first registered, first served basis.
Perhaps you could clarify a mystery. Might your procedure explain why I have not received Judging Assignments over the years at several Old Town meets? OR, was told that my name did not appear on any class judging list?
Inquiring minds would like to know.
Thank you and have a great day!

I am sure this is printed in the JRM but I just dont have it in front of me. What is the maximum number of cars, per class, that can be judged at this meet?

          Thanks,
          Chuck

Chuck, eight cars per class. There are instances where the team leader has worked with the chapter judging chairperson and split cars into two classes if qualified judges were available, judging up to 16 cars in a class.

The accepted/postmarked before date language is there to mitigate the davantage a person may have should he/she have mail delivery issues. Since there is a limit of 8 cars per defined class it can fill quickly. I am not sure how it is done at national but should we have 10 cars with the first day postmark we would let the team leader and Roy know to see if they want to try and get additional judges. We have done this in the past although we have never had a whole class fill on the first day, we have had a class fill by the end of Oct.

Filling the judging teams is currently the sole discression of the team leaders. In the past the meet judging chairman did have input. We would try and staff the teams with a mix of new and experienced judges. This was a way to provide a bigger pool of judges for all events. The Winter Regional has been fortunate that many members enjoy the event and come back year after year.(ThankYou.) This works to the disadvantage of new judges and advantage of the team leaders. Due to the popularity the team leader usually has the choice of many master judges in attendance so it makes it hard for a new judge to get experience and points. This is one reason judging schools were started, it helps people get points and exposure.

i can assure you if your registration is submitted before the Dec 1 cutoff the team leader had your name, my software makes no distinctions. If you indicate you want to judge your name is furnished to the judging chairman, he then has software that does the same as it generates the lists sent to the team leaders. I have those emails going back many years.

There is no consistancy between how a team leader makes a selection, some do first in, some use ????, and some go for only master judges. I would like to see a methodlogy that includes a random selection done at the meet. The team leader would chose a core of judges with 1 or 2 slots avaiable to be chosen from registered judges present at the event, this could be done the same day the cars have to be on the field and you would have to be present to be selected. At our meet several classes have many more wanting to judge than can be selected. The current methods discourage many from attending and I think many more would come if they knew there was lottery chance of being selected.
