    1958 Charcoal Paint Marks

    Gentlemen,

I understand that on 58 vettes exterior paint color was written on top of the front crossmember and at the interior of the trunk, behind the trunk liner. Am I right?

Now, how was it written for a Charcoal exterior painted vette? "Charcoal" or maybe "black"? Also, was it the whole word or an abbreviation (how)? Was it marked the same in both places?

On the rear divider panel in trunk upper right hand, looked at one yesterday. char Do not know about the front crossmember but would guess that its the complete word.

Front crossmember note will be exterior color.

It is green grease pencil on the trunk liner.

Yup, on the trunk front fiberglass panel in green, says 'CHAR'

58 - Vin 2xxx- Divider panel denotes -CHAR- However the orig color is unquestionably BLACK.

Thank you all for your replies.

So, "CHAR" on the rear divider panel in trunk upper right hand is now clear to me.

What about on the front crossmember? Is that mark correct for a 58 and would it be CHAR or CHARCOAL?

That's mighty early for black. #6308 is definitely Charcoal.

I realize that the hobby at this point would not expect to see a vin 2xxx car in black. However the fact remains, I have in my possession a 58 displaying orig black paint. No metallic content at all. --regards/ Joel Miller

I know what the expert opinion is with regard to 58 and black but I would give a frequent flyer ticket to someone that is a paint expert and involved with the 58-60 judging manual to look at car before the paint evidence goes away. The car is the 1966 NHRA World Champion Street Eliminator and won with gray primer over the original paint. The original paint is now going away for restoration. It will never see charcoal or black on the exterior in the near future.
                      Regards

I would take the ticket, but I am not involved with the judging manual.

Found some charcoal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! --------- Car had been stripped very thoroughly at least twice in the past and painted black twice. After stripping every nook and cranny no charcoal was to be found until today. Pulled off the windshield frame and stripped two coats of black paint from the channel and discovered a small dab of charcoal that had been missed in previous strip jobs. Just an old race car so now I'll paint it in its racing livery. Regards /// Joel Miller
