    California six tail lights

Does the addition of six tail lights to a C2 count as deductions in Flight Awards? Do you have to show Calif. registration and/or it has to be a '67? Thanks for any info.

Or, bring an original 45 RPM record of Jan & Dean's "Dead Man's Curve" .

Please ignore the two responses above. Both gentlemen must have forgotten their daily meds.

Six tail lights was never a factory option on any Corvette, California or not. It was a popular owner inpired customizing touch back in the day. As such there will be a deduct during Flight Judging.

OK, thanks. I was having an argument with another NCRS member who claims California law required six tail lights, and posted these pictures showing new '67s with six tail lights at a Covina, Calif. Chevy dealer's lot to prove it:

Scroll about half way down and you see many new '67 Corvettes on the lot with six tail lights. But I guess the Calif. law requirement was just an old wives tale. Thanks for clearing it up.

            Michael -

That's Clippinger Chevrolet, who probably did more "six-taillight" jobs than anyone else; there was no such law - just a popular dealer-inspired extra.

From a C-3 owner.......... WHAT? I do know that 4 were factory good and 6 were 2 too many in ANY state! (At least if you're following OEM standards & NCRS referance manuals)

In the old days Grabiak Chevrolet in New Alexandria, PA sold a ton of new Corvettes. A big option was the 6 taillites with sequential turn signals. They made a lot of buks doing that to the point that most of the midyears in our area had them.

On ebay I saw a NOS 67 taillite panel for sell for only 300 buks. Trouble is you only get 1/2 a panel. Go see as it's good for a laugh which we are need.

As a native Californian I can tell you it should be a law, because that is a cool look. That midyear looks like it is about to blast off and frag some Cylons.

Does anyone know what the VIN NUMBER is of the Wingate 67 Coupe shown in the photographs?

                      Re: California six tail lights

As a former Californian, 6 tail lights became somewhat popular on 61 and 62s. I believe Big John Masmanians 61 drag racer had them. Then they became popular on 63s through 67s. I remember an aftermarket Corvette place offering them as an option. I'm pretty sure the Grand Sports had 4 tail lights, but an extra hole, for cooling, where the 6th tail lights would go.

                      I still like the look!

we installed them so we could have sequential turn signals like the cougars did back then

I notice the new Mustangs, or at least some, have sequential turn signals. Must be a Ford thing.

                            Re: California six tail lights

Many of the most expensive American cars in the 50-60s had six taillights (or six bulbs). For example, compare the taillights of a 1965 Chevrolet Impala with the Bel-Air/Biscayne. The Impala had six while the cheaper models had four taillights.

I don't believe that the six tailights on C2s back then was just a California fad. It probably happened everywhere. Adding extra taillights to Sting Rays back then is similar to the young people of today adding huge rear spoilers, overwhelming audio/video systems, etc. to their small econo-cars. Different fads for different generations. -Clark

Clark, you are correct about other areas having six taillights. I saw some in the '63-'67 timeframe in Indianapolis and I saw two dealer body shops in Fort Wayne, IN installing them in the '63-'67 timeframe.

White steel wheels used to be popular in the Indianapolis area in the mid-late 60's also on street and strip cars.
