    Re: Distributor Cap

Dad and I have had many discussions with many people over the years on this subject.I will tell what we believe but I will qualify it first with this."The surest piece of information we have is that NO ONE is a true "expert"on this subject.NO ONE has all the answers."Dad and I have interviewed factory line workers and supervisors, looked at vintage pictures, and looked at literally thousands of cars in junkyards(If the car has a Delco distributor cap, dated Packard wires and an original Delco point set,it probably is the distributor cap that came on the car)Through the 1967 model year the patent pending cap was used.We have a strong confidence in this.In 1968 a patent number cap was used(Perhaps through early1969?)In 1969 the patent pending "R" cap was used. This cap was used until late 1970-early 1971.Then the patent number "R" cap appeared and stayed in use until the HEI system was introduced. We believe the "R" signified the introduction of resistance wires, not replacement. We have seen too many cars with everything else original to believe that R stood for replacement. It was also not Delcos practice at that time to "label" there parts that way.We have seen small and large Rs and can find NO indentifiable pattern as to there use.(?) That is what we have seen.If someone has done the research and has some quantifiable enlightening information,I would love to see it.I still learn something every day. Please dont say "I saw one this way"Do the serious reseaarch and homework.
