I finally installed the windshield in my coupe tonight after much problem installing the moulding clips. The car didn`t have a windshield or the moulding clips when I got it seven years ago. While working on the body over the years I had cleaned up the windshield frame and epoxy coated the whole thing thinking I was doing something good but when I went to install the clips I had to find the old mounting holes which took 3 to 4 hours. That being done I read as many of the posts as I could find on installing the windshield and read the service manual. I set the windshield with new gasket installed on the lower lip and worked several hours but could not get it up the top in. One big problem was the seal hanging up on the clips finally breaking 3 of them. I removed the windshield and replaced the three clips and duct taped over the edge of all the clips and extending several inches on the body. This did two things, it showed me where they were under the seal and aided the seal to slide by without grabbing the clip. Also I read of installing it in reverse what the manual says that is to install the top first which I thought was worth a try. This was much easier and you could work your away along the bottom pulling the seal lip over the lip and pressing on the outside (much better than pushing on those upper corners) . It went in without much of a fight and seemed much easier than installing the bottom first. This may be common knowledge but maybe it will help someone. I did not use the string method but rather my fingers and a flatblade screwdriver. It was the first windshield I have ever installed and with no help. Just take your time.

Re: 65 Windshield Installation
mike
Just put windshield in my 65 conv.Used a rubber molding i
bought in 1977 from gm. Used the string method and worked great
except when i got to the corner and it pulled out a chunk of rubber.
the molding cost was 14.70. so much for trying to save money.
Monday it gets pulled out and a new molding installed. It has
been 27 years since it has had a windshield installed in it.
About time dont you think.

Re: 65 Windshield Installation
Hi Bill, Times goes bye in a hurry. My windshield gasket was new but I bought this windshield in 1972 to go in a coupe that never got finished and was sold. (my son came along and I needed the money) I sold everything but the windshield. It was stored in my attic for years and was there when my house burned in 1985. Somehow it wasn`t broke. A friend stored under his bed wrapped up in a blanket for 18 years and gave it back when I bought this car. It already has bubbles around the edges but they are mostly hid by the weatherstrip and mouldings. It isn`t a date matching as I had never heard of such a thing when I bought it. I couldn`t bear to not use in this car as it had been with me longer than most things in my life. It looks good to be installed and finally has a home. Mike- Top

Re: 65 Windshield Installation
Mike
I would use the windshield too. Neat story.
My windshield is not dated also but was in the car when
i bought it in 1982. It also had a inspection sticker on it dated
1977 so i had to put the non dated windshield back in. The 1965
vette has not been on the road since 1982 when i took it apart.
I am restoring it now. boy has prices when up or what.
This c2 is going to go on the road when finished.
hopefully soon if i dont run out of money first.
happy motoring

Re: 65 Windshield Installation
Thanks Bill, Mine to will go on the road. My car was stripped when I bought it in 2001. I always wanted a midyear coupe and had gave up hope of ever having one as I persued other interests over the years. Money is what is slowing me down also I still have a lot of high ticket items to buy but I do enjoy working on it. My grandson (2 1/2 yrs) stays with me one day a week and he takes the four grill screws out every week and gives them to me. (car doesn`t have a grill yet just the screws to keep the unuts in place) It will take him about thirty minutes and he thinks he has really done something. Good luck on your car and hope you get it on the road soon! Mike- Top
