    64 depressing clutch causes noise

1964, 4 speed, started making a strange sound with car not moving and pushing down clutch. Sounds like the throw-out bearing had some how shifted off clutch fork. The further you pushed it down the louder it got.
Somewhere in this forum someone suggested the noise could be coming from the starter. I thought, no way, but I had to replace my starter and the noise is gone. Starter looked fine.
How did the starter contribute to the noise when the clutch was depressed???

Ted, can't wait for the answer on this one. I have no idea what the clutch and starter would have to do with it. Bill.

I had a depressing clutch once, but I replaced it and now I'm much happier...

        Release bearing, or pilot bushing/bearing.

I'm with Bill on this one... makes no sense at all on the surface... There was a post not too long ago which had to deal with the clutch inspection cover creating a noise... I don't recall if it was tied to clutch operation or not...

In any event, I would just drive the car and see what happens...

If you had the noise and now you don't following replacement of the starter, a logical conclusion is that something that was once rubbing was disturbed during the replacement process. It's very difficult to locate a noise that doesn't exist, so drive the car and don't worry about it until the noise reappears.

When I bought my 89 S-10 with 80k miles on it, the throw out bearing would sing like a bird with the clutch disengaged...chirp, chirp, chirp. One time when my son was between vehicles he "borrowed" it and put 25,000 miles on it. When I got it back no chirping, not even a peep. He was probably using the clutch pedal as a footrest. It's at 148k now and the clutch is quiet and works fine. Sometimes I wonder how many pieces of the bearing are laying in the bellhousing cover.
