Confusion re: smog pump pulley- Joe L??

OK, I was having a conversation with another owner of a '69 L-46. He had a smog unit on the car and it had a smog pump pulley #234. I noted this was wrong, that the 234 was a 300 hp pulley, stating the 68-69 JG that said the 350 hp car takes a # 458 DA deep groove pulley. I have noted the 458 DA and the GM later replacement, the 458, are both ridiculously expensive when found on ebay. Crane's makes an affordable repro.

Anyway, he maintained the #234 was correct and provided a couple of links from this board, one of which from June where Joe L. stated the 234 would be correct on a 350 hp car. I'm having trouble balancing these issues. Is there a definitive answer, such as 300 hp = #234; 350 hp = #458 ? (as stated in the JG) Or can it just be whatever? I believe one of the threads that was provided even mentioned a third part number.

Any help? Joe, has this been clarified?

I just don't recall what research I did that brought me to the conclusion that the GM #3917234 was used on 1969 L-46. I may have had some good basis for it, but, as of this moment I would have to say I was incorrect and the correct pulley for 1969 with L-46 was the GM #3932458. However, I believe the 3917234 was likely used for L-46 with C-60 applications.

The GM #3932458 was never officially superceded by any other part number. It was discontinued without supercession in October, 1985. The 3917234 was discontinued without supercession in July, 1986.

By the way, the GM #3917234 pulley was used for 1970-72 LT-1 applications. That may IMPLY that it might also have been used for 1969 L-46 applications and, perhaps, that's how I came to my earlier conclusion. 1969 L-46 otherwise uses the same pulley system as 1970 LT-1.

Anybody out there with a 1969 L-46 that's reasonably sure their AIR pump pulley is original?

Hi Joe, It was my car in question in which we discussed the 234 Pulley.

My car is a last day production (18th before end) and that may have had bearing on our earlier discussion.

There are 1970 parts creeping into very late 69's such as the Alternator etc.

I guess the question is if the 234 Pulley was utilized in very late production 69's.

I guess that all depends on whether they ran short towards the end and that could be very limited.
