One last chance to find an exceptable "look like" and functional oil pan for a 1962 340 hp rebuild before buttoning it up. I have purchased a new repro pan from CC but know that the oil drain plug location on bottom side is not correct. No hope of finding one to use original bolt-on crank rod baffle but that's ok...i'll take one w/welded baffle. Can anyone tell me where to find a 3 tear "look like" oil pan with the drain plug in the bottom center like original.....i've spent hours on the web looking and been to junk yards. Sounds like a simple thing...but it's not.

This pan, while undoubtedly fully functional for a C1, is not, at all, configured like any original C1 pan.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

There were a "plethora" of different pan configurations used over the C1 period. This makes finding the "exact, correct" pan for any particular C1 application quite difficult. Making it even more difficult, the part number was not stamped on any of these pans.
Until about 4 years ago, GM offered a replacement pan for all 1957-62 applications. It externally differed in minor ways from the originals, but it did have an internal "trap door" as many of the original SHP pans had. It could also be used with an external baffle (i.e. windage tray).
I used to highly recommend this pan to folks needing a C1 oil pan. Although not 100% correct, it was near correct and it was NEW; not used, dented, and distorted. The next thing you know, all sorts of folks decried the use of this pan and pointed out the nuance differences between it and original pans. Why, it seemed that no self-respecting C1 restorer should be caught dead with this SERVICE pan on their car.
Well, now the pan is GM-discontinued. Now I'll bet this pan is a LOT more precious than it was when you could still get it from GM for about 150 bucks. Now I'll bet that there are LOTS of C1 guys needing a pan that would just love to have one of these with the nuances be-damned. But, you can't get them from GM anymore. That's how it always goes, though; when parts are still available from GM but somehow different than original parts, they are scorned. After they become discontinued, they are treasured, even though they slightly differ from original PRODUCTION pieces.
The part number was GM #359937. You might still find a few around but I can virtually guarantee you that you won't buy one for 150 bucks. I know where there are a few but none for sale. All you folks had the same opportunity to buy them as I did when they were still available. But, as I say, no self-respecting C1 restorer would be caught dead with one of these on their car!In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: oil pan for 62 340 hp SB
Jerry, Joe Lucia is absolutely correct about pan #359937, It was the last pan for early SHP use sold by GM. Made in Canada & painted black. Today I had my 62 in the lift, & compared one with my origional 360HP 62 pan. (same as 340HP engine, except for induction system) It is almost identical, 3 steps, trap door, identical spot welds, 2 dimples on bottom, drain hole in right place, 1 long verticle groove on each side. The only diffrence is 2 short additional verticle grooves on dipstick side, (left) & 1 on other side , (right), plus a small diffrence in the 4 corner bolt reinforcement plates, (each has 3 small spotweld dimples, that could easly be filled). The 3 small verticle grooves could be filled, & it would be right. Don't give up, I have seen them over the past two years in local swap meets, & they are often overlooked because they are painted black, & everyone is watching for orange. Try Carlisle, Canfield, Hershey, Bloomington, Kissimee. Good luck, & don't be in a hurry. It is easy to change a pan in a 62 after the restoration. Barry- Top
